While pulling the lower unit on my 1966 110 9.8 hp to replace the water pump the entire shift rod came out. After some penetrating oil and heat I got it to separate like it should have in the first place. Is there any easy way to get the top half back where it belongs? Also, is rod position critical? (I noticed there is a flat spot on the two mating ends) Is this something that I can just adjust prior to reassembly or do I need to pay attention to how the top half is placed back in the shift linkage? Thanks, Walt

Capt, your going to have to remove the carrier and prop shaft to release the sping tension on the shift follower spring, make sure the shift cam is not turned over if you remove it from the unit the cam and shaft both have a blind spine to line every thing back up Bob

Re: 9.8 hp shift rod

Thanks Bob. Any tips on getting the upper part of the shift rod back in place? It looks like removing the carburetor might give me access to the linkage where it goes. Walt
