OK,

I got the flywheel and stator off. The stator was painted. There was no ways it could get a decent earth. Cleaned it up a bit at the contact points to earth and added a round terminal to solid earth. Re-installed the flywheel.

But now I'm having hassles re-installing the LU. Moving the gear selector with a vice grip only yields neutral and forward at opposite ends of the rotation range. My dad says on his old mercs there was a small steel ball that's fallen off which is why we can't get reverse.
If this is so, what's the easiest way to get it in position again? Or is there something else we're missing?

There is no ball if you turn the shift shaft one way you will fell the detents for fwd and neutral if you go by neutral you will come to rev but if you go by rev it will snap back to fwd and you will have to go a round again

Great! So there's no stop? I should be able to turn it all the way around? And just to double check... Looking at the LU from the top, crank rotation is clockwise, right?

Any assembly tips?

Should I slide the LU on in forward, neutral or reverse?

I like rev but I know others that like FWD, so I guess it's up to the individual

Just to test my selector...

Looking at the LU from the top, which way should I turn the selector shaft for full rotation? Clockwise?

From thr top unit shifts counterclockwise from rev to fwd and clockwise from fwd to rev. Also if the engine has a rev lock on it the cam must be lined up before the unit is installed

Re: Re-installing the LU Inline 6 Merc

Thanx Laddies and Clams!

Went together nicely, I wound up using neutral. Tested forward and reverse, all good :)

Found the source of the water in oil contamination and sorted that out aswell :)
Will refill from the drain plug as per your instructions later this week.

The engine is now totally rebuilt.
Carbs fully rebuilt
Fuel pumps fully rebuilt (Including the casings ;P)
Water pump checked (Always had good tell tale)
Stator earth corrected and improved.
All ignition earths redone and verified
Trim and tilt. Fully rebuilt.
Steering. Stripped and cleaned. Great improvement.
Link and Sync done to clams' post
All grease nipples greased.
All suspect electric wires replaced.
All air intakes in the casing and shrouds opened.
Vacuum side of fuel line fully rebuilt.
Tank cleaned and checked.
Rev counter reading verified. (Is/was out by a lot :( , and promptly blew up a day later :-/)
Compression test good +-120 PSI (+-1) on all cylinders
Reed valves seem ok since I can idle in neutral at 750rpm and shift into gear without the motor dieing. Getting around 600-650rpm in gear iirc.
Lotsa rain here the last coupla weeks so the dam is filling up nicely.
Wake board and tube ready for action.
Apholstry redone here and there.
We're considering a voltage regulator due to the speedo blow-up, but it could've been a spike due to the bad earth on the stator.
