Got it. I don't know a lot about engines so I don't know about spark testers. I'll look into that. (I thought you were suggesting I pull the wire off and hold a lead 3/8 off the top of the spark plug. I know you can't gap a spark plug 3/8!)

I have a 1989 Stratos 179V with a Mercury Mariner Magnum 150 hp that has a dead trim motor. The hidden screw looks to be inaccessible without lifting the motor and removing the bracket from the transom. Does anyone have a trick that would help me avoid that? I'm not looking forward to that...
