33hp, finally out of storage. Now what?

After years of dragging my feet I've finally decided to do something with this 33hp. My tinkering is usually on 10hp and below, and as such, I have no experience with electric start systems. I'm pretty sure I'm not strong enough to rope start this beast, and I'm way out of my comfort zone. What...

    Mid 1950's Auto Lite Starter - 12v or 6v?

Acquired a 1955 25hp parts motor for $20. Owner was going to scrap it, but I saw the complete Auto Lite brand starter, bracket, and flywheel bolted to it, so decided to roll the dice. Before I put power to it to see if it spins - I want to double check that the voltage is indeed 12v. I seem to...

    Old shift shaft orings

I got the shift shaft bushing out of my old 25's lower unit. Going through my Sierra kit, these are my best guesses as to the replacements. Fat o-ring in the bushing, flat gasket on top of that, correct?

    Lower Unit Workbench Clamp?

I'm disassembling and resealing an old 25hp lower unit. First time I've done one this big. (Lots of 3's 5.5s and 10's, but I'm branching out) I don't have a great method of keeping the lower unit (with drive shaft and shift rods protruding out) clamped immobilized so I can put the necessary...

Help me ID this Brass Prop Cone

Re: Help me ID this Brass Prop Cone It's definitely not the common plastic prop cone. This thing is solid, with some heft to it. The cone is about 2" tall, with an inner diameter of 1-1/4". Turns out it fits perfectly over the shear pin collar of an old Michigan PJ-75 (65-85hp) prop, so I'm...

Help me ID this Brass Prop Cone

Going through a box of random parts. Found this prop cone. Heavy, solid brass, not plastic Suspect it came off a 1960's vintage V4 OMC, but can't find a part number on it, nor can I find a picture of an identical one anywhere on the internet. That's a quarter next to it for scale. Any ideas...

How to best clean twist throttle grip

Throttle grip for my OMC-built Gale. Pretty dingy, and the dirt feels very, shall we say, set-in. Surprisingly, the grip isn't the same hard plastic as the waffle and ribbed pattern ones used later, it feels a bit softer, and more porous. Dishsoap and a scrubby sponge is my first instinct, but...

Big Twin 25 OMC 302583 Sierra 18-3865 NLA...

Noticed 18-3865 is no longer in my employer's Sierra dealer catalog. Tried to special order one directly from Sierra to replace my OMC 302583 head gasket for my 25hp Gale Project, and got shot down by the sales rep. No longer available, doesn't appear to be replaced by anything. This might not...

Barn find with low compression, cheer me up

Re: Barn find with low compression, cheer me up Took the Head Gasket and bypass covers off. Rings are free and springy. Tops of pistons, domes and old plugs are filthy. Cylinder walls aren't as good as I'd hoped, but aren't awful. A few little scratches, but no big scuffs.

Barn find with low compression, cheer me up

Re: Barn find with low compression, cheer me up It's a '58 Wards Sea King 25. I know.... this is the J/E forum... but since it's an OMC product, and virtually identical to a J/E 25 big twin, I feel it's more appropriate to post here than the "other" forum. Anyway... $40, bought it from a Swing...

Barn find with low compression, cheer me up

Dug a late 50's 25hp out of a shed. Didn't run when it was put away decades ago. $40 as is. So I rolled the dice. Got it home on the stand, squirt of WD40 in each cylinder. Fingers crossed... 48lbs on each cylinder. At least it's even, but not what I was hoping for. Really not excited about...

    Gale->OMC Parts Cross Compatibility Chart?

I'm going to rebuild a 1958 Sea King 25hp (Wards GG-8589A, or Gale 22D15B) Motor's been sitting for decades, so it's the typical perishable stuff that needs replacement. Seals. Gaskets. Ignition. Carb kit. Standard straightforward barn find that I've done plenty of times before with J/E models...

    1956 QD17/10012 10hp Lower Unit Seals kit

I've got a 1956 Johnson QD-17, (and a couple of identical Evinrude 10012s too) that I need to replace the lower unit seals on. Everywhere I look, I can only find info for seal kits back to 1958. Are the 1958 Lower units the same as 1956? I was under the impression they were, but I need to be...

1960 Gale Buccaneer 3hp Leather Carburetor Packing Seal 550259

Snapped up this FREE 1960 Gale Buccaneer 3hp motor a few weeks back. Got a new lower unit seal and a new wobble pump impeller. Took the carburetor apart, float looks to be in excellent condition. It is cork, however, so I'm going to spray it with alcohol resistant sealant. New ignition parts...

    1962 QD-23A vs 1963 QD-24B (10hp) Weird difference

I've got a 1962 QD-23A (bad powerhead-good lower unit) I also just aquired a 1963 QD-24B (good powerhead, but a bad lower unit). Total investment $60. I'm going to build one runner out of the two. The 62's (left in picture) lower cowl pan seems to be bolted securely through the lower leg. The...
