1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

I'm back and reviving my own dead thread! Been a busy few years and the boat has pretty much just sat in the driveway. Removed 2/3 of the old foam and then nada. In the last four years I've gotten married, changed jobs, and started fixing up the house I live in so we can buy it from my dad...

Hoping this posts... Funny thread I stumbled across while looking for a good hitch cover. MOD EDIT - Because we've a similar threads before and we don't link to that forum.

    1967 mercury 20 anode location?

Okay, I found the serial number off one of your other posts. Part 54 and 55 are for your anode plate. Part 54, the anode plate, is Mercury part # 97-47820A1, though you get more Google results with 97-47820. Part 55, the screw for it, is Mercury part # 10-29081 I hope this helps! Let me...

1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

Part 41 on the parts diagram. A Mercury 818298 anode. Zinc and Aluminum are available everywhere. Magnesium I found for $65. Thinking about just picking up a magnesium fire starter or two and bolting it on.

1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

I saw this today and got to thinking, could I install a large fuel tank under the deck? I was thinking it'd be great if we ever decided to take a day or weekend cruise up and down the Mississippi. I was talking to the admiral about maybe venturing down the river and stopping at...

1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

It's not for the outboard itself. It's for the below ones, plus the one attaching the transom to the knee brace.

1985 Mercury 75 - Fine on land, dying at idle in water

How do I check the advance and the timings? Getting into TDC/BTDC/ATDC/?TDC is more than I have ever done with an engine, and I clueless about it. For the mixtures, I was already thinking of taking the carbs back off and removing the idle jet and screws. Do I have this right? Also, what is...

1984 Starcraft 16ft Glutton for Punishment [Splashed July 2019]

There is a bracket that attaches to the side of the hull and to the transom near the eye bolts in my boat. You can kind of see the bracket here, and the eye bolts about 6-8 inches to the left of it. Let me know if your boat has these or not. If not, I'll get pictures and measurements so you can...

1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

The rest of the transom was largely intact, so the admiral wedged a board in and pried it out. Holy crap, this thing looks bad... What's left of it anyways. That is all that is left that was intact. Well, barely intact... That transom was beyond shot. We were...

1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

UPDATES! After gluing the transom together, we went to remove the old one. I can now tell you from experience, an engine hoist or chain lift is better than ratchet straps for removing a motor... After removing the motor and putting it on a stand (sorry, no pictures of this step), we started...

1985 Mercury 75 - Fine on land, dying at idle in water

Okay, I set up a super scientific back pressure simulator. It worked well enough to kill the engine the first couple times it started. Then it ran fine. The engine was already warmed up from running on just muffs. Since the bucket wasn't tall enough for the water intake to sit submerged, I still...

    1985 Starcraft livewell plumbing

These photos may be easier to see. The lid is under a seat. I like it, saves on space. The drain hole is in at the rear of the livewell, port side. The hole goes through the deck as well. It's a stepped design, the driver seat is over the forward part of the livewell. These holes tell...

1985 Starcraft SS 160 with 75HP Mercury Outboard restoration and upgrades

Picked up marine grade plywood after all. Menards is having an 11% off rebate on everything. ^_^ The Admiral drawing a straight line down the center. Starting the cut... Cutting the ply in half, as we only need 22". It saved us a good amount going with just one sheet. The...

    Transom issue

While the transom is off I am thinking of putting in an automatic bilge pump and being lazy and leaving the manual one in. Problem is I want to be really lazy and just use a T connect with a check valve to hook it into the existing output hose. I am going to go ahead and call myself out on that...
