What Brand of Brake pads are best quality? What do you guys use for quality?

Funny- Just today I ordered new brake pads for our 80,000 mile Mazda CX5. Did some research and decided on these Raybestos EHT pads due to their high rating and reasonable cost. Hopefully they’ll last as long as the OEM pads!

    Engine Swap

First thing to do after removing the old drive/ engine is to fully check the transom and stringers. If they are fine, clean and paint the bilges. Surprised it hasn’t been suggested already.

Self-inflating PFD inflated in storage. Common?

Yep, humidity can dissolve it. i have 2 auto-inflatables and keep at least one re-arm kit for each onboard. Also, I test them every couple years- by jumping in the water. About 10 years ago, I tested my old (very expensive) Mustang brand offshore model and guess what- a seam in the bladder...

    Good spray on weed killers.

Last time I sprayed, it rained 12 hours later. It took another 24 hours to see the grass and weeds start turning brown- but they did! 👍 I’m sold on this method because neighbors have little kids (and we all have wells). It’s also less expensive than any of the marketed products. Also, I don’t...

    Good spray on weed killers.

This really works. I re-spray every month to keep the ground clear.

    27PC - motor/pump sound from bow

Welcome! Just guessing here, but could it be the windlass solenoid? They are typically mounted close to the windlass. It’s possible that due to corrosion or age it’s stuck and the contacts are ‘fluttering”. I’d try to operate it a few times and see if the noise stops or the windlass fails to...

    BMW headlight . . . $1,000 !!!

Typical BMW. I’ve had an ‘01 530i (e39) for over 20 years and noticed the HID headlights were noticeably less bright. Tried adjusting the beams but they both are broken due to the old plastic. OEM replacements are stupid expensive. Found some youtube fixes so I bought new plastic adjusters for...

Ford Winsor 351 Engine not winterized

I believe marine plugs are brass and automotive are steel.

    Fuel smell after fueling up

Your boat is 23 years old, so I’d take a hard look at the hoses from the fill to the tank as well as the vent line. They can become permeable. Mine is 40 and I’ve replaced every flexible hose onboard.

N Y requires everyone to pass a powerboat operators license

Do you know if they will accept a boaters certificate from Md or NJ?

    Outboard wiring conduit

I had a dockmate who renovated his cruiser, and he used gray PVC electrical conduit as wire chases.

Should I buy a boat without a survey?

You posted: “I think it's a good boat if there are no major structural issues (with mast or hull) that I didn't see. Wonder how to "buy" this boat, take it to a surveyor, and then negotiate from there. I know that is not standard procedure though. Has anyone done something unusual like this in...

Bellow job question on Alpha 1 Gen 2 for DIY

I forget one more tool- not essential, but makes it waaaay easier to remove and hold the outdrive- a purpose-built outdrive jack! I decided to buy one just because I’ll need it soon to rehab a 23 footer sitting in my back lot.

Bellow job question on Alpha 1 Gen 2 for DIY

I just helped a friend do this last weekend. He used aftermarket items. Do yourself a huge favor and replace all 3 bellows (drive, exhaust and shift cable). In our case, only the shift cable bellow was damaged but we replaced all 3 while we were in there. FYI- the shift cable must be removed to...

Bimini top seems to have shrunk

I had custom Sunbrella covers made for my 34 footer 15 years ago. If I leave them down for a couple days they are VERY difficult to re-install. I found wetting them down works pretty well. I also have a special tool called the Top-Snapper that connects under the button and allows you to pull it...
