Re: Id 80hp. Mercury
Here is a wiring internal diagram for a early 70's 80hp.I have one of these and when tuned right they run really well.Caution ignition parts are exspensive and are becoming harder to find. The wiring internal as well as external the insulation became brittle and fell off...
I've got a question for you Merc. Guru's.I own a 1978 inline 6 90hp that I rebuilt and it runs like a champ.I am real curious, according to spec's this motor is supposed to run W0T 4500 to 5000 rpm.I have read alot of information on inlines 6's running past the RPM range that Mercury suggests...
Re: 1968 Mercury 650 Distributor
Im not sure what you got going on there but 333-3144 is for a Mercury 50 Hp. 500 Lightning Energizer Distributor Housing .Your serial number does show 1968 650.You should have a distributor that looks like this (first Pic)
Re: gas out of carbs
On the 850 carb adjustment 1 1/2 turns out for starters. If your carbs are leaking you either have the needle seats not sealing properly or your float is not adjusted properly. You can spend all day in the driveway trying to get that motor running right and in the end when...
Re: Plugs fouling with metal
This is what happens with bad timing and or cooling problems.I would suggest you look at your timing and make sure you gettin enough cooling when running. I hate to say this but damage has already started in your case. Take a compression test to see what she say's.
Here is something a little different.Looks to be alot of fun and probably $$$.......

Re: 1968 Mercury 1250ss still runs ROUGH after new top end!
I dont think it would be the reeds, after bolting the block and the intake cover back together the reeds are tight there not going anywhere. With the pins/dowls in place they cant move.I would shoot more towards the timing. You could try...
Re: I'm new to this sea foam formula..
My avatar is a 15 foot fiberglass trihull Marlin with a 78 inline 6 90hp doing 43MPH @ 5000 rpm. GPS.
Dont let the cowl markings fool ya.This is a motor that was put together from all kinds of motors.
Absolutely correct ...You don't want a penetrant...
Just curious!!!
Is there any special reason why Mercury kept the rpms down (4500-5000) on a 78 inline 6 90hp.
Most inline 6's all run in the mid 5000 rpm? Seems kinda odd that this is the only model that I am aware of that runs in this rpm range.Hell even my 850 runs in the mid 5000 rpm's well...
Re: my boat sunk...
Dang,I feel for ya Buddy.Thats something I dont think anybody likes to see.But not all is lost, the quicker you get to drying this out the better.I was reading around here and found this in regards to sunken motors.Good luck.
Re: 1974Mercury 1150 Thunderbolt won't start! HELP!.. Please?
1974 1150 has the thunderbolt type II ignition CD ignition (pointless) distributor/trigger.It either works or it doesnt.Set your nr.1 cylinder to TDC,take a look at the position of the flywheel markings (should be pointing TDC...
