Hey eveyone I am new to the forum and the boat world. I have a question about my out board. It is a 1969 Mercury 500 Kiekhaefer #2629264. I have taken the boat out several times and need help with a diagnosis. At first start I squeeze the primer bulb but the last time I did this there seemed to be no resistance and I could smell and see fuel coming out of the engine area, it was also all over the water. Eveything looks to be connected. No loose hose and they are in good condition. When the engine is hot it will not start easily nor will it idle too well. I have put the correct amount of oil in fuel and changed the plugs which has helped with starting and she at least will idle now. The previous owner had been using too much oil. Today I tilted the engine and heard a girgling coming through the exhaust by the prop. I look up at the top and there was gas trickling out of the cowling area into the boat. So I tilted it back to the upright position and it stopped. Could this be a bad float? Or just rebuild the carb altogether. One other thing I forgot was when I had a hard time starting when hot my friend would slightly squeeze the primer bulb and it would start.
Thanks for any advise!!
