SOLVED. Bad tachometer.
Last weekend I verified battery and switched voltage was good & connections tight. I couldn't find any problems with the harness or connectors. I opened every connector on the motor & checked they were clean & tight.
So that left me with the alarm itself.
I found a NIB...
The blockage was in the 1/4" elbow atop the tstat housing.
Now that I can see the water is pumping I can take it out for a short ride to see if it overheats. IF i get a break in the lousy weather. Today was supposed to be warm & dry but instead I've got cold & spitting rain.
Can this water tube be cleared from the top down--or is that a bad idea?
My thought here is if I can get the water flowing then I can motor down to the ramp and remove my boat. I'd rather work on it in the driveway.
Actually i DON'T think the impeller is my (only) problem. When I saw it wasn't peeing I checked the outlet hose & found it was plugged with dauber dirt. I cleaned that out but still it didn't flow. I can't blow air into the plastic elbow on top of the motor that the hose connects to. The metal...
How difficult is it for someone with mech ability but no experience to change an impeller IN THE LAKE?
I just moved to a new lake house so this spring has been full of unscheduled work. I bought a kit to change the impeller while it was still sitting on the trailer. Then the move suddenly...
Continuous.
On my drive home tonight I was thinking about how it's acting strange. At one point during my brief cruise the radio also acted up. It started screaming along with the alarm tone. Volume control had no affect (separate amp), couldn't turn it off. Embarrassing.
Turning off the motor...
If I was overheating just cruising at 1200 rpm, why would the tone (NO light) immediately stop when I pull it back to 800? Or speed up to 3100? This seems counter-intuitive to me that it would be so specific.
... But there's no warning light and the motor seems to be running fine.
The alarm tone stops if I keep the motor above 3000 rpm, or at idle.
I thought the warning tone was supposed to accompany the light--but doesn't sound by itself.
2000 40hp Johnson.
Factory harness, no splices or mods.
One thing about this dock that doesn't feel right--There are NO auger posts at all.
It just sits on the wheels, plus a pair of small feet in the middle of the 3rd section right where I'm tied.
I think I'll replace the small feet with augers.
It's apparently been used like this for many years...
I resorted to calling the guy who has been installing & removing this dock at this house in past years.
He made it look easy--but it was necessary to unbolt the end of the plastic decking to get the hook thru the narrow slot.
I'll be doing it myself in the future IF I can find a helper. This...
