Hi everyone,
I am waking up a 5.5HP old seahorse and need to buy a new gas tank. Would it make sense to go with 3 gallon gas tank and 5/16 fuel line? I was debating between the 3 gallon and 6 gallon gas tank. The engine will be mounted to a 12 foot boat.
Thanks,
Russ
Re: Repairing 1/2" hole on bottom of fiberglass hull
This is the original problem hole:
Here is the hole I drilled to see if there was any water in the boat. (was dry foam)
Hi everyone,
My CVX-16 started leaking a few weeks back. I have drained it out (the best I can) and put a fan on the hole for the last 7 days to ensure the area is dry.
The hole is about 1/2' wide and right down to the foam. Since the hole is not visible I am not worried about how the...
Hi everyone,
I am in the process of waking up a 1960 Johnson 5.5HP seahorse that has been sitting for 20 years.
My small bore hole light arrived so I took a look inside the cylinder. The walls look fine but the top of the pistons are covered in carbon. (crusty looking)
Should I take the...
Hi everyone,
I am rebuilding the carbs and not sure what solvent to use when cleaning them. I have a can of deep creep, is this acceptable?
Thanks,
Russ
Hi everyone,
This thing has been sitting unused for 15-20 years. Compression is 81 and 79. I am hoping to wake this thing up and make it a reliable back country fishing boat engine.
I will be performing the following service:
- Replacing entire ignition system
- Rebuidling the carb
- Replace...
Re: Waking up a 1960 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 HP (Model CD-17)
I completed a compression test, here are the results:
Top cylinder - 79
Bottom cylinder - 81
I got the top cylinder reading after 3 pulls but it took the bottom cylinder 6 pulls. Is this telling me something?
Also, Attached is a...
Re: Waking up a 1960 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 HP (Model CD-17)
Thanks for all the advice. I purchased some Seafoam Deep Creep and put 2 squirts in each cylinder. Not sure if I should put more but I'll let that sit for a day before doing anything.
Attached is a picture of the plugs. The bottom...
Hi everyone,
I picked up this engine that looks to be in good shape but hasn't been run for 15 years. It has sat outside in a sheltered shed.
Based on what I have read it is best advised that I check the compression before servicing the water pump, changing coils, replacing spark plugs,etc...
Hello,
I have a 80's era Glastron ski boat with a 115 HP engine. The current Safe-T steering mechanism appears original and does not have the "no feedback" feature.
A few questions:
- Is this easy to replace on my own? Ex. Simply switch out the steering wheel mechanism?
- Are there any...
Hi all,
I am adding a in-boat fuel filter to a 3/8 fuel line. I am little unsure whether I have the right size barbed brass hose connectors....When I connect the 3/8 line the barb connector slides right in. Should it be a tight squeeze to get these barbed connectors in the hose?
I figured...
Hi everyone,
Since I have an 25 year old internal aluminum gas tank in the bow it was highly suggested I also add a fuel filter in the boat. I purchased a Mallory Visi-bowl with 10 micron filter.
Questions:
1. Is there any risk that having a 10 micron filter on-board will add too much...
Hi,
I understand my new 115 HP E-tec has fuel filter on the engine but the manual highly recommends have one in your boat too. I always use premium (91 octane gas) and had my internal aluminum gas tank cleaned out by the dealer a few years ago.
Is there anything I need to consider when...
How do you guys determine outboard horsepower needs for a ski boat?
Example: 750 LBS 16 foot fiber glass ski boat.
Would you say a 115 two stroke is adequate for pulling 250 pound grown men?
I hear varying opinions from the people on my lake. I know you could pull people with smaller...
Hi there,
A good friend of mine is looking at Baja with a 1993 Black Max 150 HP outboard. Just the regular version, no oil injection. He has the mechanical history and everything checks out in the regard, dealer maintained since day one.
Just wondering how people feel about these engines? Do...
