I just purchased a boat with a 1974 85hp Evinrude. It had been sitting a couple years. I started it a week ago on muffs and ran. Started it again two days later and it ran. Just instaled new water pump kit and can't get to start.

I am tring to remove lower unit on a 1974 85 hp Evinrude. I have losened the bell crank halves and seperated the shift linkage from the bell crank. The manual says it should drop. It looks like its hanging on the shift rod conector.
Don't see a way to remove it from the shift shaft.

Replaced the water pump with new kit. I asked about sealing plate to housing and was told there was some in the kit, only to see it was lube for the shaft. I just bolted plate down and finished job. Now I read a post where it sounds as if you have to seal bottom of plate. Is this true? Haven't...
If I do the job on the back of the boat. Is there enough room to pull the lower end with the shaft, out? Or do you have to remove motor from boat to get enough clearance. Kinda dumb question I know, but.
