Johnson 70 hp 3 cyl / 2-stroke dies when giving more throttle

1983 J70ELCETE I just had a very similar problem. Turned out to be my brand new fuel pump failed (torn flapper valve). It would start and idle great, but wouldn't come up on plane and only had half power at full throttle. Never really stalled out though. I pulled the fuel pump and split it...

    Boat safety question!

I have a 70 on it now and don't really plan on doing any skiing behind the boat. Right now we're just doing some tubing with my three kids (all under 10), fishing, and cruising. That said, I do keep my eyes out for 90HP outboards. When the right one comes along, I'll probably jump on it.

Top carb on 1983 Johnson 70 has fuel buildup.

Finally got my 1983 J70ELCTE on the water and it ran great...very grateful. There is 1 "issue" I am running into however. With the airbox cover off, there is a little fuel spitting out of the top carb where the main jet comes up through the inlet port. Its not a ton of fuel, but it does pool up...

Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

Got the holes drilled and everything lines up. Do you recommend putting any material between the outboard transom bracket and the outside of the transom? I've neen people using wood, plastic, or aluminum plates. I assume its to reduce wear on the transom skin.

Post a pic of your starcraft!

Here's my newly acquired 1987 SS160. Was garage kept and was never drilled for an outboard. I took off the 1976 35HP Evinrude and replaced with an 1983 70HP Johnson. Updated all electrical, added interior lighting, dual batteries, spots, bimini, custom dash panels and seating rearrangement. A...

    Boat safety question!

I also ended up customizing the original "back to back" seat bases, and cut them to use as bases for the front seats. Also added a swivel mount to each base. Now they adjust front to back and swivel. Gained a little more storage and this layout is perfect for our family of 5. Overall, very...

    Boat safety question!

So I ended up raising the box off the floor slightly 5/8", plus the space between the seats, and also the ski locker vents directly to the bilge area. I figured between the 3, there should be ample ventilation. The entire back seat system is also completely removable (box and seats). I think it...

Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

Okay, that's what I was looking for. The starting point. I wasn't sure if I should hang the outboard directly on the transom and drill the holes at that spot -OR- raise the unit up a little and drill the holes a bit higher, since the outboard will need to be raised anyway. The way it looks...

Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

What am I making a template of exactly...the outline of the transom bracket? I do have that traced directly onto the transom skin when it was hanging on top of the transom. That would be it's lowest possible point.

Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

I have an 1987 Starcraft SS160 with a 1983 Johnson 70 J70ELCTE (20"). Transom height is 20-1/2" from bottom of keel to the top of the transom. The transom on this boat has never been drilled because it had a 1976 Evinrude 35HP with the hand tightened transom mounts. The transom is absolutely...

    Transom getting replaced have ???

I have a question about a similar boat ('87 Starcraft SS-160) My transom has never been drilled for an outboard before. The P.O. only had a 35hp with tightening bolts. I am adding an '83 70HP Johnson to it. Anyone have any tips on the best way to drill for new holes in this case. I don't think I...

    Boat safety question!

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the feedback. I was actually considering putting through vents in the seat base. Potentially even a small blower fan as well. Shouldn't be all that tough. I would also place two vents on the splash well right behind the seats or on the angled faces on both sides....as...

    Boat safety question!

Thanks Jeremy! The boat only has a small 6 gallon removable fuel tank that vents through the cap. That was kind of my concern. It does not have a permanent tank with a tube vent. The seats are fairly quick release, so getting to the battery and gas tank isn't all that difficult. In fact, I...
