Trying to fix broken small outboards is kind of a hobby for me - I got some from my marine mechanic. I don't use this motor on my boat. I'm just trying to learn. I'd like to understand why this carb doesn't work.
This motor ran fine a couple years ago. I tried starting it and it would only run if I primed it, and stopped after a few seconds after the fuel was used up.
I put another carb from an Evinrude on it - exactly the same carb - and it runs fine. Starts readily and idles good.
Before trying the...
Hi boatgreg,
I'm hoping you or others can help me understand something. My 87 Johnson 50 starts readily and idles fine, but once on the water under load it dies. I thought a carb cleaning may solve the problem, so I attempted it myself.
On removing the hose from the small nipple on the lower...
I'm making my first attempt at changing the impeller. I've removed the brass shift connector and the 5 bolts holding the lower unit, but contrary to youtube videos I've watched, it still won't drop. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?
I finally got it off with a gear puller. The inside of the prop appears to be tapered, and it fits over a non-taper cylinder that looks like some kind of hard rubber.
Somebody in the neighborhood left out a Johnson LD-12A 5hp (1967 I think). I took it home, and after some carb cleaning and new needle valve and seat it runs pretty good.
It needs a new prop, and for the life of me, I can't get it off. It is on a threaded drive shaft - there was a nut that...
The trolling motor I use is a relatively new Tohatsu 6hp. It doesn't appear to have a toothed flywheel, although I haven't taken the pull start assembly off. I'm pretty sure an electric start requires a toothed flywheel - correct?
Thanks for the response. Yes, I'm talking about modifying it to have an electric start. The pull starter it has works fine.
I'm thinking of using this as a trolling motor. My 72 yo shoulder has rotator cuff issues and I'd rather not be pulling starter cords.
