why I still prefer gauges in my cars

I don't know much about your truck, the temp gauge on the dash may be accurate or biased, from what you've said it seems likely it is accurate. It isn't completely analogue with the temp gauge wired to te temp sender versus digital with the sender wired to the ECU and ECU telling the gauge...

why I still prefer gauges in my cars

I was going to say much the same about temp gauges pointing where the ECU makes them point rather than pointing to actual temp on a lot of vehicles. On a lot of modern vehicles the temp gauge will point to absolutely 'normal' temp shortly after engine start when the engine is still warming up...

    Lost my mooring

So they're removing the mooring, not allowing someone else to have it?

    Mechanic tricks?

I have a few spanners (wrenches) I've ground thin to allow getting on to narrow fittings on pipes that are sandwiched between other fittings. Made lots of custom tools over the years, made one last week - needed to undo a 10mm bolt which would have been fitted as part of a custom install in an...

    Mechanic tricks?

I've been doing the '2 spanner trick' as long as I remember, used it today.

    Lost my mooring

13 Years... How long does someone need to have the same mooring before they get the same kind of loyalty from the harbour that the harbour seems to give to 'grandfather' moorings? I would appeal on that basis.

In the beginning the compression was low ...

A long shot but I'll mention this to my dad's old friend. British, retired, engineer (and though retired still partly owns the engineering company he set up), been into boating all his life, knows his way around engines, used to regularly drive to Italy to pick up and deliver stuff for his...

    Hull cleaning

Thanks, I'll remember that for next time. Does chalking imply any damage to gelcoat or is it the stuff itself crystalising?

    Fluctating Voltage

There might not be much wrong with the alternator.. Not too unusual for voltage at idle to be around 13.8v if there are other electrical loads besides just the ignition system / fuel pump and fuel injection system. At around 13.8v the battery might not be getting a good charge but it won't be...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I might expect the engines to become a little more economical when run in but I would think it difficult to judge when they're run in on that basis. Wouldn't it need to rely on you already knowing fuel economy for fully run-in engines, while you probably won't know that unless you've already...

    Hull cleaning

I've used oxalic acid only once to get rid of small rust stains on the swim platform and remove water marks from the hull,. Works well but seemed to leave a dust film which I removed with polish. Attacks wherever it contacts the trailer. Both reasons why I only used it once. Used a car...

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

How long do the new engines need to be run-in for before you can get it on the plane / try full power?

[SPLASHED] I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Been following this thread a long time, looking forward to seeing pics of it on the water and hopefully reading how happy you are with it @tpenfield . Best of luck!

Can I buy a used 302 and use parts from my bad motor to convert it to marine?

Question for @louc and @Scott Danforth If an engine / drive combination was available with either a Chevy or Ford motor, is it just the bellhousing that needs to be changed if swapping between the different motors or would you need to change the coupler and transom stuff too?

Help! Bought a 1993 Four Winns W/ 5.0 OMC Cobra Motor and Drive - Losing power after crusing

If the engine cooling system presssure test crept down over 5 or 10 minutes I'd be doing it again and making sure there were no leaks at the plug... Creaping down is exactly what would happen if there were a small leak. Yes I would also be testing the manifolds. The worst thing that could...
