Carb tuning - top carb not responding

Just to followup. Pulled the top carb, found the needle wasn't allowing the bowl to fill at all. It's a brand new needle, old one was still working, but it was discarded. I ended up bending the tab on the float. Issue resolved. Running on all 4 cylinders now.

Carb tuning - top carb not responding

Hi, I performed a carb kit on my 1979 50hp 4cyl - S/N: 5336799 Afterward, when tuning the idle mixture, I noticed that when adjusting the idle mixture for the top carb, I get no response. The engine runs rough, and won't rev very high. I got a little improvement after adjusting the lower...

    Throttle and idle controls

Thanks, that's good to know. Is there any sort of maintenance I should be doing with this? Does the cable require any greasing? I know when I move the lever, it sounds/feels dry. It moves OK, though I don't have any boating experience to compare it with. Thanks

    Throttle and idle controls

Yeah, I have neutral at midnight. I was going to open it up this weekend and see if I can gain an understanding of how it works. Perhaps there's something I can do. Thanks

    Throttle and idle controls

Thanks for the reply. My system is definitely operating outside those specs.

    Throttle and idle controls

Hi everyone. I'd like to adjust my console throttle controls. I have to move them a lot before the motor responds. In particular, the idle lever has to move about 50% before you notice anything, and the forward throttle about 90%. Reverse actually seems OK though. Is there a document...

    Trim tilt pump

I ran across this video. Seems like a simple solution. I may end up trying it myself: Back to your question, in order to power two cylinders, I would imagine some sort of splitter would do the job. You'd need 2 of course, one for supply, one for return. Hope that helps.

    Trim tilt pump

Hi, I've got a thread going with a similar discussion for the '79 version of same engine. Going to keep an eye out for just such a kit. It seems to me that you could find any 12v hydraulic pump with the right specs and adapt it to work with your cylinder. It would obviously take more work...

    Tilt/Trim 1979 50hp

Thanks for the great replies. I'll keep an eye out for an old power trim unit. As for towing, I can travel with it up on the transom saver, that's easy and works well. I am only concerned about backing down the boat ramp (or back up) with it down. It sounds like that's probably OK, though...

    Tilt/Trim 1979 50hp

It's probably 5" off the ground parked in the driveway, probably a bit higher when attached to the truck. I wouldn't leave it down while pulling out of my driveway though.

    Tilt/Trim 1979 50hp

Wow, lots of good info, and interesting stories. Sounds like my unit is complete albeit stock, but that there are (or at least were) options. I had the thought of replacing those shocks with hydraulic cylinders, sounds like such a solution was already thought of. I do like the idea of the...

    Tilt/Trim 1979 50hp

Still learning quite a bit about boating. Haven't put it in the water yet though. I keep finding things to do. I'm thinking the tilt function isn't working quite as it should. From what I can tell, this is something I should be able to do from within the boat and I should be able to lock it...

Impeller Replacement - Among other things

Hi, just wanted to followup. I pulled the lower unit off again. Didn't find the issue, but used some compressed air to confirm there is no blockage. I reassembled everything and now it's peeing as it should. Not sure if I did something wrong initially, or dislodged something with the...

Impeller Replacement - Among other things

Thanks. I used a garden hose and ear muffs. Is that not a sufficient test?

Impeller Replacement - Among other things

Update. I replaced the impeller, but still no pee. I was careful to ensure the impeller pointed the same direction as the one I removed. I know it's clear between the engine and the telltail. I was sure to get the water tube to align properly with the water pump. That was something I...
