The tilt assist is frozen. I don't want to spend $600 on aftermarket. Plan is to find a donor motor with bad powerhead for cheap. I'm not in a hurry so given the time I'm confident one will turn up.
Racer,
I sent Evinrude an email requesting information on compatibility. Best I can tell by studying diagrams, the '89-97 35,40 and 50 horse motors that have PTT will work.
Don't waste your money on an aftermarket manual. Get the factory manual. Often you can find used ones on ebay for great deals. In fact I just bought an unused one for that particular motor on ebay for $23 delivered.
If the journals measure well (not close to the minimum) and the bearings show no evidence of excess heat (blue) and feel good I would reuse them. If you are unsure what feels right and what doesn't find an experienced mechanic to look at them. Those bearings generally outlast the rest of the...
I have an older Fluke 83 which does Min/Max but the resolution is limited to 100 milliseconds. I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere a DVA needs to have resolution at 250 microseconds. Is that true or will my Fluke work fine for diagnosing ignition?
You are correct, the journals on that crank are never ground and there are no undersized bearings. When doing a rebuild mic the journals (there is a spec) and inspect journals for damage. You can put in new bearings but it's possible there is no measurable wear and bearings look so good you...
I purchased a download file of a service manual for the engine and found it to be sorely lacking in many respects. I want to buy a genuine factory manual but have not yet found one for the 1986. I did find a used 1987 available at a reasonable price. Would that be essentially the same as the...
I have a 1986 60 hp Evinrude (new to me) which was running when I bought it and the hydraulic tilt worked but I did not try to lower the motor all the way down. I have the engine hanging on an engine hoist and plan on bolting it to the boat tomorrow. A few days ago I wanted to make some...
I recently bought an older flat bottom aluminum 17' Jon boat that has no identifying information other than the hull id # engraved on the outside of the transom. I would like to contact the manufacturer if they are still in business to try and obtain a certificate of origin for title purposes...
