Finally got the new lower unit and it’s back from the shop. They were not able to find anything wrong with the motor. They only ran it in a test tank. It does shift easily now. I put it in the pond and began the lower unit break-in process. Ran well up to about 2800 rpm then started stumbling...

I decided to shim it with a couple of stainless steel washers. That seems to have solved the issue with it hitting the motor. I still think it’s hitting the wire whenever it’s trimmed all the way in but I can’t see it so I don’t know for sure.

Raised the motor and now it is stuck all the way up. The manual release appears to be frozen in place. Hit it for three days with PB Blaster, tried a big screwdriver, and manual impact driver and an electric impact driver. It’s starting to strip out the screw slot now.
