Is there such a factor to consider in setting up the steering arms between outdrives for best steering?
I have 800 OMC Stringer outdrives; no don't dismiss that!
The straight ahead steering is very jittery - overcorrects a lot.
Now as a car mech I appreciate toe in will cause this and toe out...
My port 800 sterndrive has the older hydroshift gearchange mechanism.
I do remember when testing before installation, you need to create oil pressure with an electric drill to see if it will operate.
First boat trial yesterday - port engine stalled - in gear. Was it a bu**er to get into...
After researching the archives I found the gear shift hydro assist was upgraded in about 1982 / 3 to a mechanical change.
Well the boat has one engine now with the hydro assist and one with the mechanical. I rebuilt both boxes with new shift cables, they are installed and work fine except one...
Gentlemen, both Stringer 3.8 OMC's (1981) are installed now, everything in working order.
However, the starboard helm remote lever shifts forward and engages reverse instead of forward and when shifted back it engages forwards - bit awkward for lining up the two throttle controls to go in the...
Just finishing the V6 engine rebuild but now find the water pump double groove pulley is so big it swamps vision of the timing scale on the crank pulley.
I can just about see it from the side - but the other unfinished engine has an additional timing scale bolted (to the timing chain cover) on...
Just overhauling distributor in final engine rebuild - I'm thrown by the advance weights appearing to be clamped stationary by a plastic collar.
My manual does not mention this.
Is this correct? Why should it be so?

My next step is to reinstall the 1981 3.8V6 OMC and Intermediate Box with mounts at the best height on the stringers relative to the existing transom aperture.
At present I think the transom boot channel around the intermediate comes far too close to the top of the gearbox aperture when the...
Gentlemen,
I've got both my 800 Stringer outdrives in bits ready to reassemble. The boat is a 1981 with twin 3.8 V6's
The main problem has been salt corrosion rather than wear (everything was seized and I'm in the UK with little/no parts availability) but thats another story.
After fighting...
I've nearly finished the rebuild on my 1981 Fletcher Zingaro which has twin 800 OMC stringer outdrives. They are both right hand. Should I be expecting unmanageable steering; was there a left hand 800 option? Thank you gents.
