Evinrude Model J6RCRM Prop Shaft does not touch F/N/D shift selector

Are you referring to the correct age of gearcase Pre 1980 were very different to a 1984

Evinrude Model J6RCRM Prop Shaft does not touch F/N/D shift selector

IIRC there is no preferred position but I think I would set it in the forward gear position so that the spring is least compressed. Once the gear case is all assembled the shift rod will not turn easily and normally you should not try to engage gear without the engine running but provided you...

Evinrude Model J6RCRM Prop Shaft does not touch F/N/D shift selector

I cannot relate what you are saying to a 1984 6 hp!

Evinrude Model J6RCRM Prop Shaft does not touch F/N/D shift selector

I have the long shaft version of the same engine, There is no adjustment or "setting up" to be carried out. If yours is not selecting the gears properly you have assembled something incorrectly. The only thing I can think of is that you have fitted # 29, the shift cam, upside down as Racerone...

Confused? Voltage Regulator vs Rectifier; Tach & Charging

If the battery is disconnected will the engine is running a high voltage peak can be produced. This is what blows the diodes. Not sure why the stator windings would melt . That would require a high current flow

Confused? Voltage Regulator vs Rectifier; Tach & Charging

Sometimes the rectifier and regulator are two different components but often they are combined into one unit, hence the name rectifier/regulator. A 1980 115 without power tilt and trim will have a 6 amp stator and just a rectifier. But a variant with power tilt and trim will have a more...

    E starter won’t engage.

Make sure that the Bendix pinion assembly can be wound up the starter motor shaft quite freely by hand until it engages with the flywheel.

    Sparkplugs

The recommended plugs are Champion UL77V or L16V ( both surface gap plugs)

    1987 88hp evinrude v4 crossflow

At some point in the late 1980s the recommended plug gap for all OMC. engines was changed from 0.040 to 0.030. I understand the reason was to extend plug life. You'll never detect any difference in the way the engine runs

Racerone is right. It is the meter from a combustible gas detector See this link https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8024640/jw-sniffer-r-model-g-gas-detector

Gear shaft not engaging neutral (E8RCRM / Evinrude 8 HP 1984)

IF it shifts between forward and reverse OK the shift rod is correctly engaged with the cam

Gear shaft not engaging neutral (E8RCRM / Evinrude 8 HP 1984)

Wear on the cam should be obvious. There is sufficient drag for the prop to turn when the flywheel is turned. Mine does it! Try holding the flywheel and then spin the prop by hand . If it will turn freely without the flywheel turning you do not have a problem.

    Motor turning to the left

The spring #72 looks Ok but you appear to have sheared the head off the screw #65. Perhaps you will be able to grab hold of the remaining bit of the screw with vice grips and remove it. Then it's just a question of sourcing a replacement screw locally.

Therefore the firing tip will be cooler.
