I bought my 1989 Arriva 2050 5.0l alpha 1 gen 1 last year, had it out 3 times before it was time to put it away for winter. Had it in the driveway the past week going over everything to make it water ready again. Took the family out yesterday and had dinner on a beach. Everything was fine, getting off the trailer it had reverse, leaving the beach it had reverse, getting up to the dock...put it in reverse and she lunged forward. Lower shift cable by chance?

Ayuh,....... Welcome Aboard,....... That would be my guess, but I'd investigate it to see if that is the problem,....

How would putting the shifter in reverse cause the drive to go in forward gear? Or am I missing what happened?

Ayuh,..... That's why I'd investigate it,.....
I'd sooner think it might be a controller issue,.....

most likely it never came out of forward gear when op shifted to reverse. wonder if the interrupt switch is working proper.

Believe i found out why. First pick is how it is supposed to be. This morning when I went out to check things out, this was the only thing I seen out of place. What would cause this to slip out? It feels like it should be springy cause I was able to put it back in place, and also was able to with 1 finger pull it out of place as well.

There's a washer/spacer in between the cases that likes to escape when they're split. Proper fix is to split the case and replace the washer, the "other" way is to put a hose clamp around the shaft to keep it from dropping back down. That's assuming nothing weird is going on. The drive should still shift by hand. However, if this is a new to you boat, you should 100% replace the impeller before you start using it.

I was going forward, towards dock, idle speed, shift3d into reverse and pushed back just a bit to slow her down and she went forward...very unexpected.
Yeah, you never came out of forward gear before that shaft slipped. Pushing the stick back at that point just gave it throttle.

Thanks. Will take the lower apart over the course of the week and see about getting that done up. And yeah, with lower apart, might as well change impeller and gear oil since I will have to drain anyways. Winter project is to pull the entire outdrive and engine, there is a leak atnthe gasket at theby-pipe and transom.

Pull the whole drive now, it's much easier to work on and lets you check out the gimbal/ujoints/alignment (buy a tool on ebay). Leak by the transom is no bueno. Y pipe can corrode and leak down there. If it's a leak around the transom shield though you're likely looking at a rotten transom.

Ayuh,...... As noted above, there's supposed to be a stainless washer that sits on top of the shift spool, that holds the shift foot up into the shift shoe,.....

For less than $400 to get the kits and a few tools....might as well. It will allow me to check the transom for rot too I would imagine, to see if it is that or at the y-pipe.
