Since I've discovered my rollers are off center I'll need to fix that as well as replace and add a keel roller or two. What is best for soaking the rusted threads?

Depends on how bad they are rusted......most penetrating oils work well for basic rusted fasteners. I have used ATF for bad rust along with penetrating oil.

look up project farms and then search for his tests on penetrating oils and some claimed concoctions. Last test I saw a few years ago, Liquid Wrench was the top one.
I use Kroil also.

Finding it around here can be a real challenge....
Yeah. Back in the day I had to mail order it. Now there's that site that people go to to purchase everything online.
And yeah, Joe, it isn't the least expensive stuff, but it's worth every penny when it is the only thing that will work in some cases.
Put it this way... Other penetrants may work, but if it doesn't come loose with Kroil, it ain't coming loose. The only thing I've used that works better is an oxyacetylene torch. Of course, some things just can't be torched.

Man, that Kroil better be good ... approx $2.50 and oz vs $0.50 per oz for PB Blaster ... I will stick with the PB Blaster ... works good enough for me.

Kroil or better yet, mix 50% acetone with 50% ATF.

if you just want to remove rust, oxalic acid mixed in a paste. then put a wet cloth over it to keep it moist.

Cutting is a last resort, but if the bolt or nut can be heated orange hot without damaging stuff around it, it will usually break free.

On a similar vein, I used to scoff at steak cooked medium-rare. Well done was all I'd tolerate. Then I tried it and realized what I had been missing my whole life. ;)

Steel turns orange in excess 1,000F. By that time, you've compromised the metallurgical properties of the fastener. Might as well save time and either cut or break it off (over torque) and be done with it.

Indeed. I don't even reuse stuck and rusted fasteners which break free using Kroil. Do people do that? If so - great reminder, dingbat.
I knew a guy who would re-use nails. Silliest thing.

I know a guy that not only re-used the nails he pulled from pallets, he used the wood too..... and built a garage with it. his only expense was time, windows, siding and shingles.

It's amazing what some people can do with old pallets. The wife loves pallet wood too. Even she draws the line at reusing nails. I pray I'm never so hard up I can't buy a box of new nails and a contiguous length of varying sizes of wood at least 8' long. Making roof trusses from nailing pieces of pallet runners together for a long span with used nails doesn't sound like a great idea.

I can remember around 1944-46 helping my Dad straighten nails he recovered from packing crates. During WWII you just didn't go to the hardware store and buy nails. Didn't mind straightening nails as much as I missed having sugar for my morning cereal back then.

That is how trusses were created......
