I put the mastercraft to bed and in storage till spring. I am planning the spring tune up and rather than points thinking of going electronic instead some say it is a difference maker in performance and ease of maintenance. does it really make a difference?

Yes. No more cleaning points, setting dwell, and timing. You still have to check the cap and rotor to make sure it’s in good shape but that’s just regular maintenance.
I take the point plate out and put it in a waterproof container and stow it onboard for emergency. That way if the electronic system goes down I have a backup that will get me home if need be. Never had to do that but it gives me peace of mind when I’m out far on Lake Superior.

Personally I would drop a electronic distributor in vs a Petronix set up , which also means a different coil . This will not fail you like a Petronix might ( I've had one let go ,coil ) or the points crapping out . Yes , I know you can adjust the points or put new ones in while at sea . Just the thing you want to do with a boat full of guest and 2-3 footers rolling you around while messing with the points .
