So... pulled the coupler off - the one that was bent - and while I was there, I figured I might as well pull the flywheel off and look at the rear seal. To my surprise, it looks like it has a slow leak. I had already wiped off most the oil before I took this photo. Assuming I should replace it...? 2006 5.7 GXI-G ~450 Hours. IMG_2123.JPG

you can do it without removing the pan, however its about 10x times harder. or just pull the pan, pull the adapter, remove the seal, clean up the adapter, install new seal, then re-install everything.

Would a leaking rear seal be expected with 450 hours? I guess it is 20 years old… what else should I be looking at before the motor goes into the boat?

Hard to say, the front and rear seals on my old 4.3 which has to have at least 1500 if not more hrs on it, don't leak, but on the other hand, I just had to have the rear main done on my 2007 Grand Cherokee 5.7 which has only 135,000 miles on it. When this one went, it was leaking like a sieve, lucky I wasn't driving at highway speeds, probably would not have caught it fast enough to save the engine. I drove from my home to the grocery store, stopped at a D&D drive through first (no smell yet) by the time I got to the grocery store it was smoking like a diesel, so I had it flat bedded to a local transmission shop and they replaced it for me. I'd fix yours now while the engine is out.

GM has trucks failing with front oil seals leaking on the lots and under a year.

It's man made, if it's leaking, replace it
