1996 Johnson 115 - Carb rebuild questions - Plastic body?

I'm going to help a friend rebuild his carbs on this motor. I've done a number of carbs but haven't done any plastic body carbs. Anything that I need to be careful of when cleaning the plastic body? Any problem spraying with carb cleaner? What about the jets? Should the throttle body be removed...

'96 Johnson 115 - Trying to replace tilt and trim

I'm trying to replace the tilt and trim on this unit but I can't get the lower rod out of the bottom of the unit. I was able to get the top rod out after a fair amount of persuasion but the bottom is being extremely difficult. I've tried soaking it with everything that I have and am destroying...

Trim and tilt - What is this noise?

When I lower the motor, it makes this squealing grinding noise but I can't figure out where it's coming from??? I thought maybe the motor was hitting the stern bracket so I put a piece of plastic in between the two but that's not it. I also did the same thing where the trim rods meet the motor...

'98 Yamaha Tilt & Trim - Loud noise

When I lower the motor and the bracket of the motor meets the top of the two tilt pistons, there is a loud squealing noise as the motor is lowered all of the way down. After looking closer, it appears that where these pistons contact the pads mounted on the motor bracket, the tops of the pistons...

'73 Evinrude - Running out of fuel - Replaced fuel pump

On the way home from a diving trip last weekend, the motor ran out of gas. I checked the tank and there was plenty of gas in the tank (I have portable 6 gallon tanks). I pumped up the primer bulb and it started right up. I checked the primer bulb while it was running and it kept going soft. In...

'98 Yamaha Tilt & Trim - Not working after rebuild

I replaced the seals in my tilt and trim unit. After reinstalling it back in the engine bracket I filled it up with fluid but left the top of the piston disconnected from the motor. I ran the piston up and down numerous times stopping to refill the reservoir. After doing this a number of times...

I have a '98 Yamaha 115 and the trim and even though the trim and tilt seems to be working, it makes this noise that I don't have a clue what's going on with it. The noise happens at the 20 second and the 30 second mark in the video. https://vimeo.com/user3430902/review/91510804/5f99dbf62f...

1987 Johnson 70 Carb Rebuild Questions

I've got an '87 Johnson 70 that has been sitting for quite a while. The only way to keep it running is by choking it before it dies. So first thing I'm going to to is rebuild the carbs. I've got the carb kits and I'm ready to start but I have a few questions. First at the top of the body...

'98 Yamaha 115 - Tilt and trim correct maintenance procedure

The tilt and trim on my motor has been making a growling noise when the tilt gets in certain positions. I haven't done anything with this unit before so I thought I would start with the fluid check / fill. Is the procedure just to tilt it up, unscrew the fill screw, fill it up and screw it back...

'98 Yamaha 115 - How do I know if it is running too rich?

When I run my '98 yamaha 115 2-stroke in the driveway, it smokes quite a bit at startup but then gets better after it warms up. I can also see a gas-sheen in the water on the driveway when it's running on muffs and I've been wondering if it's running too rich. I'd rather it ran too rich than too...

    Want to daisy-chain gas tanks

On my setup, I run off of three different 6-gallon portable tanks. What I would really like to do is tie them all together so when I'm out for the day, I don't have to mess with them. Is there a way to daisy chain them together? I haven't figured this one out yet. Thanks for your help!

    Can you clean fouled plugs?

I've got new plugs in my motor but I was having some problems that were fouling the plugs but that problem' has been fixed. Question is since these are brand new plugs and they've been fouled, can they be cleaned and if so, how should they be cleaned? I've seen numerous posts that if the plugs...

    Hard to prime fuel line

I run my motor from the three different 6 gallon portable tanks and I've always have had a hard time getting the fuel line primed when I'm starting for the day. The fuel line runs from the portable tank through a water seperator, through the primer bulb and into the motor. I've replaced the fuel...

    '98 Yamaha 115 - Oil tank overflowing!

I took my '98 yamaha 115 for the maiden voyage today after going through everything that I could on it. After running it for maybe 30 minutes or so, I started seeing a lot of smoke. After some investigation, the oil tank on the motor was completely full!?!?!? Apparently the motor mounted tank...

Recommended all around prop for '98 Yamaha 115

I bought a '98 yamaha 115 that I'm putting on a 1972 21' Starcraft. The prop that came on the motor is a 14" 20 3-bladed stainless steel prop. It's a solid hub (not vented) and I can't find the manufacturers name on it. The mechanics that I've shown it to both said that this is a high-speed prop...

Water pump - How to remove Locating pins

I bought a '98 Yamaha 115 that looked extremely clean until I started pulling it apart. Getting the pump housing and the impeller and the woodruff key were way harder than they should have been. Got a little bit of corrosion going on and who knows when or if they've ever been replaced before...

I have a '98 Yamaha 115 2 stroke that I want to install a temperature gauge on. Is there a fairly easy way to do this? I just think this would make a lot of sense to have one. Thanks for your help!
