    Old vs New Small Motors

    I'm working making one running out of couple mid-70s 7.5s.While working on them, I have been impressed by their design. More of a swiss-watch than simple. How do they compare to the Tohatsu mercs.

    Newer Mercs Look Different?

    I have three 7.5s from the 70s and a 4.5 from 81.They all look like a Mercury is supposed to look like. On Craig's list the newer pic don't look anything like my "blue bands". When did they start rebranding Japanese?

    Carb cleaner

    I guess this shows my age,but I remember using a carb cleaner that came with it's own parts basket in maybe half a gallon can. I have a 7.5 and 4.5 with carbs that need rebuilding,but when I went to the big auto parts store,no carb cleaner except 5 gal cans, on order only.OK what can I use instead.

    Perfect Seal

    What is it,I have never run across it. I have used Locktite 597??,the white teflon in a tube,and Nevr-Seize. I'm putting together a 7.5 from a couple of parts motors,a 76 and a 75. The two props a ,three blade and a two blade,came off easy and I hope for that again.thx

    A No Water Tell Tale ? again

    I installed a new impeller on my just purchased like new '81 4.5, Seloc really helped.No key on the bottom of the pump on my second try.It started in a barrel without much trouble but no water came out the tell tale.     Rust in the gas tank?

    I picked up a couple of Merc gas tanks off of Craigslist,$20.A terrible thing,Craigslist. One is in good shape, the other looks dark on the bottom and when I hook my finger through the cap hole I get rust dust from the top.Is there easy way to salvage it?
