    97 5.7 LX, A 2 GEN 2 drive questions

Some progress, more questions... I removed the bell housing.. a bit of a pain for sure, as I suspected everything looked good, will go back with all new as long as I am there, Due to age and lack of knowledge on what I was looking at it needed to be done... peace of mind is worth something when...

    97 5.7 LX, A 2 GEN 2 drive questions

Several questions; Replacing the water pump on the motor (FWC), what type of sealant should I use on the gasket/s? I am resealing the lower unit and cannot remove the seal carrier (input shaft) as described in the book, do they normally come off unscathed or is just a matter of sacrificing the...

Port side back together, fired it up and let it warm up, then re-torqued everything once it cooled some. Got about 1/2 a turn. Checked compression 152/165. Then lowered the transom cover.......#$@%&! Always something.

Mannies & Risers, reuse or replace

Figured I would replace the valve cover gasket/s while they are easy to get at, I bought some Fel-Pro blue colored rubber looking gaskets. Was hoping there was some type of gasket for the (4) center hold-down bolts, none on there now, any suggestions...? Or just let er weep?

Mannies & Risers, reuse or replace

I spent some time tuning up the mating surfaces on a piece of quartz with some lapping compound, pretty happy with the results. I did notice what appears to be tiny cracks in one of the risers I bought (used). It seems pretty minor, however if it is a crack it will only get worse. What do...

Mannies & Risers, reuse or replace

As always, thanks Chris for your reply and help... See attached pic/s, that would explain why the elbow/rubber/elbow connection never looked quite right, however I think it was ok in terms of water flow at the top of the cast elbow. Curiously I am the third owner of this 1997 motor and am...

How far can you advance a Thunderbolt V...?

1997 5.7 LX, 4 brl carb. Thunderbolt V w/ knock sensor According to the book base timing on this motor is 10 degrees. I am not sure what ICM/module I have (its original), I am wondering what happens if I "cheat" base timing to get more TA? Assuming the knock sensor/module is working properly...

Neutral safety switch on 5.7 LX

I have a 1996/97 5.7 LX with AI GENII. I bought this package used to install in a Glasply I have been redoing. I could use some help sorting out a neutral safety switch, the prior boat that this motor came out of had a single handle binnacle. I will be using a sea dog 2 handle binnacle that...
