73 115hp Johnson carb rebuild; fuel line fittings

I've disassembled both cards on my v4 Johnson, soaked them in decarb, and replaced all o-rings, seals and floats using the appropriate rebuild kits. When I soaked the fuel trays or resevoirs (the lower component of each card that holds the fuel), I didn't remove the brass fuel line connector...

I'm abut to install a rebuilt powerhead, so I went ahead and soaked the carbs and am currently in the process of rebuilding them using the proper kits. I stumbled upon two problems: 1) The two screws that go into the face of a carb had these thick o-rings, the kit came with a red plastic...

Other problems with my 115hp 73 Johnson?

I'm about to install a rebuilt powerhead from iboats to replace my blown-out 115hp 73 Johnson. I wanna make sure that the replacement powerhead doesn't suffer the same fate as the original. In the original powerhead, the piston in cylinder #1 melted. Although I didn't hear any knocking, the...

Has anyone purchased a rebuilt powerhead from iboats?

Not sure yet, but I may be in the market for a rebuilt power head in the near future. I noticed that iboats.com sells rebuilt power heads and lower units. Has anyone in this forum purchased a rebuilt power head or lower unit from iboats? If so, how was the quality? Any complications? Did the...

    Engine rebuild on a 73 115HP V4 Johnson

Well it finally did it. Took the boat out over the holiday and as soon as I hit WOT the engine started to kick a little. No crazy sounds, I just felt like the torque wasn't constant. As I turned ouround to head back to dock, the motor seemed to get progressively worse. I haven't check...

Using WD-40 as a starting fluid

Someone told me that using WD-40 as a starting fluid isn't as damaging to the motor as ether. Does anyone know if this is true? Supposedly WD-40 doesn't dry out the lubrication in the cylinders nor does it doesn't combust as violently. Does WD-40 present another set of probelms? Just curious.

Trying to decide on a fishfinder

I recently purchased a bass boat with a crappy old hummingbird deothfinder. I want to upgrade so I can do some walleye fishing. I've had my eye on two different hummingbird models: the matrix 17 and the 565. Both units have dual beams (200MHz & 83MHz), but the matrix 17 is GPS capable. However...

Hard to start the first time

About 4 months ago, I purchased a fiberglass 15' bass boat with a 1973 V4 115 hp Johnson motor. When I take the boat to the lake and put it in the water, I have always had a tough time starting it the first time. After it starts though, its usually not a problem to get it started for the rest of...

Are the spark plugs the problem or is it something else? 115hp 73 V4

I recently trashed my surface gap plugs and installed NGK version of a QL77JC4 with a 0.04" gap. Although the specs call for 0.03" gap, someone in the forum suggested that the 0.04" would help it idle better and so forth. When I took the boat to the lake this past weekend, I couldn't even get it...

starter gear drops when motor starts to fire

This past weekend when I started my motor, the start gear would fall when the motor would start to fire. Although it doesn't seem to be a big deal now, I'm afraid that it may get worse later on and put a strain on my starter motor as it revs up due to the lack of load when the grear drops. Of...

    Shift rod disconnect

I'm trying to change the impeller on a 73 115hp V4. I'm following a SELOC manual that I've purchased and it says to remove the bolt or bolts to disconnet the shift housing. I'm trying to figure out these bolt(s) are? It seems difficult to get to. any tips?

    Drive shat seal replacement

I'm about to replace the impeller on my 73 115hp V4. I've purchased the kit (impeller, seals, o-rings -- but no housing though) and I'll probably go ahead and replace the drive shaft seal while I'm at it. Now I've recently purchased this boat and it is my first one, so I'm ignorant when it...

    I want to decarb my 73 V4 115hp

I'm having a tough time finding the seafoam spray...everyone including inoats seems to be out of it. Is there anything else out there that works just as well? Also, I've red some horror stories from people who performed a decarb and sustained major engine damage shortley thereafter. Is there...

Hard time starting my 73 115hp Johnson

I recently installed brand new park plugs (surface gap type) and have ran the engine without trouble. However, when I went fishing this last weekend, I couldn't get it to start. Luckly, another fisherman told me that the spark plugs might be wet so it might be good to tkae them out and wipe them...

    Installing impellar on a 1973 V4 115hp Johnson

I've recently purchased a 15' bass boat with an old 73 motor and I would like to replace the impeller. Unfortunately, I'm ignorant when it comes to outboard motors and although I've purchased a Clymer manual, I'm finding it confusing to follow. I've looked over a SELOC manual (although not for...
