    well,its 1975 merc 850 lower unit.after complete water pump change (really tight fit)i cant turn drive shaft by hand.it gives whith vice grips on splines.i was expecting it would have some resistance given that seals are new,but not that much.what did i do wrong?i am pretty sure parts were...

    mercury lower unit,prop shaft play

    Hi.i am in the process of changing water pump on merc 850.have 2 LU's and found that both of them have some play on propeller shaft.its up and down and side to side movement.IS THIS NORMAL??

    total tear up?mercury 850!

    Engine powering 17' boat ,out of service.#3piston gone same as "4 cylinder power head as well".no idea to what to invest and keep boat going....parts motor for c$ 800 or parts for c$400? cylinder hole borring 150,gaskets100 if,ignition system still oryginal. I will post pics of progress.
