    Swapping to an opti

The Optimax, depending on HP, may need an oil reservoir in the boat. They cannot run properly, due to their design, on premixed fuel, so drain your tank, and add the old fuel back in, a bit at a time. as you use the Optimax. The steering from the '94 should bolt up. The water pressure gauge...

    1989 Mercury 200 Black Max

The alarm buzzer is often under the dashboard. It could also be inside the control. On top of the motor is a couple of electrical devices. One is the monitor unit for the oil injection. The other is the idle stabilizer, if it had not been discarded by the PO.

    Transom replacement.

I replaced the transom on my speedboat from the outside. I would have liked to replace it from the inside however, I did not think the cap was strong enough to support it's own weight and would break when I removed it. Two key points when replacing the transom from the outside. Replace the...

Gear Lube lines plugged with bolts from previous owner

It may well be, but he never reported a place to connect the gear lube reservoir tube, but reported the gear lube was good. It is a possibility, no?

Gear Lube lines plugged with bolts from previous owner

Alpha 1 Gen I outdrives did not have gear lube reservoirs. Maybe you have one of those as a replacement for the original?

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

BTW- the exhaust bellows will not leak water into the boat if it has a hole or crack. It is sealed to the manifolds, which are also sealed, until above the waterline. A lot of Gen 2 drives come with an exhaust tube, rather than a bellows.

2005 Mercury 115 ELPTO No Spark

In that case, you will need to keep your current motor running. Here at the NJ shore, 2 cycle OB engines and OB engines with carbs are just about gone. Between the salt water and the shortage of DIY mechanics, old motors are junked more frequently than those used on lakes, and where owners...

2005 Mercury 115 ELPTO No Spark

I don't know if CDM ignitions in your era had an ECU. It may be just a trigger and carbs. Newer motors will have an ECU, when they went to direct or manifold fuel injection. I just am not sure when they were incorporated.

2005 Mercury 115 ELPTO No Spark

ADI refers to alternator driven ignition. They consist of a stator, one or two switchboxes, a trigger and one coil per cylinder. They appeared in the mid 70's on 3 and 4 cylinder motors, and by late 1979 were on all larger motors. CDM ignition consists of a stator, a trigger and one coil/CDI...

    1989 Mercury 200 Black Max

A 1989 motor would have the oil injection system, I would think. if so you have alarms for low oil and overheat. Any idea which alarm is sounding? Check the wiring harness for bare insulation on the tan wires. Tan wires with and without traces are usually the alarm control wires.

2005 Mercury 115 ELPTO No Spark

Does that motor have ADI ignition or CDM ignition? In CDI ignition, the switchbox pulses voltage to the coils to fire the spark plugs. On CDM ignition, the stator powers individual CDI units at each spark plug. Since you replaced all the likely suspects, except the trigger, you might check...

    Required Safety Course

The current Boating Safety course in NJ is almost word for word the USCG safety course I took in 1967. I would therefore expect states would accept Boating Safety Certs. from other states, except of course, they don't have to.

    Crownline gas tank

On my '88 SeaRay, the interior frames had screws holding them. Once these were out the engine and fuel tank were easily accessible. On the other hand, my neighbors Boston Whaler outrage broke a stern eye. Unfortunately the stern eyes had been installed before the top cap was put on. There is...

Why would SELOC say never start the engine using the fresh water attachment.

SELOC manuals often have catastrophic errors in them. An OEM owners manual (usually free) often has flushing instructions.

Replace OMS pump with aftermarket or Original

Thanks for the reply. I do like the auto oil injection. I guess I am flying off the idea of a rebuild for $200 vs an OEM pump for $600. Your point about the oil side is valid, since there are no rebuild kits for the oil side.

Replace OMS pump with aftermarket or Original

My 1998 Johnny 150HPV6 has the original OMS pump. It is working fine, however, It has been 25years or more since new. Should I replace it as a part of PM and if so, should I use a rebuild kit ($195), an aftermarket one ($150) or an oem part for $600?

    Rotate Impeller on Occasion

Hey Cyclops, you might mark the flywheel before storage. That way you can tell if they ever did it. Not that I don't trust marinas implicitly. They are usually bastions of honesty.

    Is this propped up enough

You might clean off the rust with a piece of emery cloth, prior to driving out the pin. Lubrication of the pin is also likely a good idea.
