    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Not likely the flywheel could come loose. To be honest, I've personally never had a ring gear break off either. Read about it a couple times on a hot rod forum, they were also discussing big block Chevys. Hard to tell, but that doesn't really sound starter pinion teeth grinding. They have...

    Spare Stern Drive

Yep, hoarder. The Admiral always gives me what for when I bring another junk home 😣 Landfills can be pricey. Finally found 2 that are reasonable, about 50 miles away. With questionable trailer, not best choice. And they want the oil and gas drained.

    Mercruiser 7.4 Starter Grinding/Partial Engagement?

Is it possible the ring gear has came loose from flywheel? Since it seems to work with plugs out, but makes noise under compression.

    Spare Stern Drive

I keep an eye on CL for free boats with trees growing out of the deck. Pull the top off the outdrive to check for rust or pitting on the gears before agreeing to take. Then take any other parts from boat I want and the rest goes to landfill. Worst part is pulling that rotting trailer around...

    73 350 not charging

Update: Works great after repairing old prestolite. New service manual showed how to full field to confirm bad alternator. Manual also described how to test diodes, all 3 positive bad. $20 for diodes and brushes. 14+ volts now. Installed new regulator even though old one was still working.

    Starter question.

Don't count on it. I thought my flywheel gears were a bit rusty and it would disengage just as you're thinking. WRONG! melted a perfectly good starter! The pinion gear MUST disengage the flywheel when the key leaves the start position. (Or jumper removed from assist solenoid as in a cradle) My...

    Just got service manual !

Wow, so much better than Clymer. Maybe even a better book than the 2 book set I have for my pre-MC1 mercruisers. It's a 73 OMC 225 and 245 service manual. Had to buy it off eBay. Outboardbooks shows one and a price, but it wouldn't go in the cart. Either they're out of stock or my PPS set-up...

    73 350 not charging

80's style Delco (Automotive 10si at right but mount the same as marine) 70's style prestolite (Second pic is a Motorcraft but shows the 2 ears for mounting similar to prestolite) Looking at prices, I can buy new regulator both diode sets and brushes for less than a new mount. Add slip...

    73 350 not charging

Been looking for a 3 wire. The mounting bracket is a 70's style for the old prestolite alternator with the 2 ears that fit outside the bracket. The only one I can find that will fit is Arco or Sierra 1 wire. I have a 80's style bracket that fits the Delco alternator, but I put it on a 78...

    73 350 not charging

Why? Just for looks. Even if it's not doing anything. The thermostat housing just looks empty without the regulator there.

    73 350 not charging

Thanks for the reply, I don't mind a 1 wire , I can still make it "Look " original by leaving the regulator bolted on but not wired. A question about the self exciting alternator. I've read they need some rpms to start charging. Is that to only get the initial magnetism charge and it's good...

    73 350 not charging

Original prestolite alternator and external regulator. A couple warm days here in Michigan, so I thawed the garden hose and started her up in a stand. Recently rebuilt Quadra jet (working great) replaced engine harness (round plugs) installed original alternator and connected instrument cluster...

Long term engine storage prep question

Thanks for the replies, I won't worry about storage with just the oil. Was just concerned about the new bearings drying up, so maybe I'll spin the oil pump before starting in the future. Thanks for also pointing out marine isn't always the same as auto. The dizzy is a Sierra Thunderbolt and...

Long term engine storage prep question

Hope this isn't like an oil or efi topic. I have 2 SBC 350's gen 1 that I've stripped down and reassembled. One has been started on a homemade test stand. The other is also on a homemade test stand but never had oil in yet just assembly lube, never cranked yet. Both are fully dressed for 73...

How to make a Light box for a poster

A frosted semi clear plastic sheet then apply a clear self adhesive vinal with the printed image. Be sure it has overlaminate applied to protect the image as installing to outside of plastic will hide any small bubbles underneath after application. Cost of the printed vinal about $10 per sqf...

1979 mercury 20hp Texas title question

Michigan is not Texas, that said In recent years we also have gotten pita with titles, everything from campers to trailers. As my username implys, I've had plenty of encounters with old low value titleless objects. It used to be just a trip to the sheriff's department for a serial number or...

    Ignition wiring question 72 350

Thanks Kenny, I'll stop looking at the Clymer and get a real service manual. I'm sure the new harness will help being sure I'm not chasing other problems. May even do away with this alternator, regulator set up for a 1 or 3 wire alternator for simplifying things. I'll let you know how it...

    Ignition wiring question 72 350

Thanks Kenny for your patience. Guess I should have clarified. I think I ran you on the wrong side of the bouy. I don't have this problem now with my temporary wiring. I have the ballast wired directly to the battery and full 12v from the starter solenoid . To stop I just pull the ballast...

    Ignition wiring question 72 350

By the way, it's on a diy stand that I've had it running with temporary wiring and bare essentials. Junk alternator just for the water pump belt. The hull needs A LOT of glass work next summer. In the meantime I'll have the instrument panel out and would like to get it all wired to run on the...

    Ignition wiring question 72 350

Yes it's a rats nest of wires. I want to clean it up and use the original harnesses. Everything about the yellow connector looks okay, but the rest is a mess. The connector at the helm was cut off and wires twisted together and then wires were run to engine bypassing harness. Ohm meter says...
