    Mystery Outdrive Gear Oil Leak

Most likely the shaft seal surface on the lower gear in the upper gear housing is the problem. Refill the drive with it tilted then remove the lower and plug the oil transfer port. Let it set and watch if oil leaks again. If so then look up into the upper and you will see oil dripping from...

    Bogging in relation to distributor

Have you ever tried just replacing the rotor when it starts to lose power? Rotors will go to ground when hot and the symptom you are describing is how a marine engine acts when that happens. Do you have electronic or breaker point ignition?

    Sea Ray 1977 200SR

The shift wires at the transom are green for go and blue for back up. The connections are covered with rubber tubes . With the ignition on and the shift in forward or reverse the propeller shoiuld lock in one way and fell springy the other way, this tells that the shift switch is working. There...

Motor runs but in water dies when throttled

For a boat that age there is a very good chance that the suction tube in the tank is some of the problem. There is a fine mesh screen inside the tube that has to be removed and left out.

Motor runs but in water dies when throttled

I hope the carburetor you purchased is a Marine carburetor for your engine and not an automobile version. When did the problem begin before you started changing parts? The problem may be in the fuel tank suction tube. Have you checked the condition of the fuel hose between the tank and fuel...

Trim pump not working in down position

If your friend provides enough weight to get the drive to go down and it does not go down after raising it then the problem is the packing where the ram rods extend. Corrosion can build up between the “O” ring seals and the retainer nut. Sometimes penetrating oil might free up the rams...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Leave the drive off and connect the hose to the thermostat inlet. Do not worry about bleeding the cooling system. It is not like a closed system.

1981 120 Mercruiser idles rough when hot

If you have a volt meter check the voltage at the + side of the coil, you should have 8-9 volts, anything less then the resistor wire is the cause. Try to measure the voltage especially when the engine starts to act up.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Yes, the screen is inside the tube. Also if you are trying to draw fuel through the anti siphon valve that is mounted on the pickup elbow then, that is why the pump cannot draw the fuel. Just drop the suction hose of the pump in the fuel sender hole.

    Mercruiser 120 starting stumped?

If there is no hole on top of the head then you will find it at the base of the water jacket inside the crankcase. That area is the thinnest part of those engines.

1981 120 Mercruiser idles rough when hot

If the fuel system checks out you should look at the distributor. It only has 1 bushing and the other one is in the block above the oil pump. Also the posts that hold the advance springs and counter weights under the breaker plate tend to loosen up. If the posts in the distributor are tight...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

At this point I suggest pulling the suction tube out of the tank. Inside the tube there is a very fine screen that plugs up often, remove and throw it away.

    Engine mount

Use your engine lift hooked to the front of the engine. This will make getting the alinement easy by raising and lowering the engine. Back the adjusting nuts away from the engine bracket. Once the alinement is confirmed raise the bottom nut to the underside of the bracket plus 1/2 more of a...

Take a look at the thickness of the transom where the drive unit is sealed with the boot. It is probably 2” at that point.

This is one reason you lower the out drive...

Whenever you switch to an Alpha you will also need the flywheel housing and of course cutting the transom along with drilling 2 new holes. Also make sure the transom is 2”. I have seen some early 60s models that had 1.5” transoms. I never used the bellows cement, if the bellows is on right you...

This is one reason you lower the out drive...

This is a 60s style gimbal housing. If you look at the raised 2 areas that the boot seats against I have in the past taken a die grinder and removed them. This will provide enough room so that the boot will be able to be clamped in place. Not the best way but compared to replacing the gimbal...

    OMC 260 Stringer Stern Drive??

I also think if OMC would have perfected the hydro system with just a mercruiser style interruption system there would have been less problems.
