    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

The lower unit is back together. I've moved on to the upper gear box. Gears are great. A couple of bearings need replacement. Looks like corrosion or overheating or both. I'm replacing Timken with Timken, so the same shims should produce the same preload and gear lash. The input shaft...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Progress has been slow and cautious. trying to keep mistakes to a minimum. I've been referring to the Seloc manual and the YouTube videos by Wayne Coll. So far I am pleased with what I have found. Gears and bearings are it great condition. Seals and o-rings are still pliable, but old and set...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

It occurred to me last evening that what I feel is not backlash in the gears. It is the spaces between the drive dogs in the dog clutch. There has to be room between the dogs to allow it all to engage. I have no reason to suspect any problems with this drive other than age, so I will reseal...

Thanks. I hadn't thought to look for videos of Mercruiser for an example. I'll search for that when I get a chance.

I'm tearing down my OMC Cobra sterndrive to inspect and reseal it. The upper and lower units both turn smoothly. The gear lash in the upper feels non-existent... like perfect. The lower unit has a little backlash in the gears if I hold the input and turn the output. The output shalt also...

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

All of the above, plus try to consolidate your small batch work as much as possible. Get a bunch of it staged for resin so you can keep on rolling, or at least not have long delays between batches. Brushes can simply be dropped into a covered container of acetone and then "banged out" and...

OMC 3.0L swap to Merc 3.0L

Like they said. Just be sure to save the serial plate from your engine so you can look up your OMC parts in the future. Screw it to your new engine somewhere. You'll still need that number. I wish the previous owner of my boat had done that.

1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

Not familiar with that, but PVC sheet from a home improvement store is a good option. You can bow it over something and apply heat from a heat gun to help it hold a curve. Waterproof and staple-friendly.

Just make sure that the plywood you use is rated for exterior use. If the bond between layers is not waterproof, it won't work for your application.

1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

Soak the heck out of them. Hot water works better than cold. Soaking in cold, and then heating the soaked wood is another way. Using supports and weight, (or using spacers and clamps) to bow the wood, followed by judicious, repeated wetting, will also curve them over time. I used 3/8"...

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

Or maybe take todhunter's idea, but use long pieces of (spacer) running parallel to the keel that you can draw them out from the stern-facing side. Apply the PB, lay down the spacer strips/planks/pipes (whatever), slide the deck into place using the spacers as rails, and then slide the spacers out.

I don't know how yours will go together, but I did my sole one panel at a time. I troweled a ridge of PB along allog the top edges of the stringers and bulkheads like a brick layer troweling mortar. Then, I troweled some on the mating edges and any underlapping joiners, and then carefully set...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Went camping last weekend. Got a few more cushions done this weekend. On these side panels, each section of foam has to be shaped and wrapped separately. It's quite a process. The seat backs and bottoms will be box cushions like the inserts of the bucket seats. Trying to stay consistent...

Thanks for the reassurance. She is beautiful. You guys are the only ones I would mention boo-boos to. We all learn from each others errors as well as accomplishments. Besides, compared to the riff-raff, rag tag boats in my area, this baby will be stunning. It's pretty much "Redneck Yacht...

Meaning that over time I will forget all about the imperfections that almost no one else will care about? When I really took time to look at the factory bucket seat upholstery, I began to see more and more mistakes. After a while, I realiazed that mine was at least as good as the factory...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

My pass-through trimming looked like it had been done by a rabid beaver. Both sides were different. Made it tricky to come up with a pattern that would work on both sides and not be huge. Happy with the end result, though. PVC corner molding caps off the raw fiberglass edges nicely...

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

It was cool weather when I did my foam, so I bored my holes at the bow and stern, and stuck a blow dryer in one until the air came out warm from the other. I used a temp gun to check the hull temp. It got to 85° or more. I bored other holes as I went. Once I started pouring, the heat from the...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I went on to the next step. Installation of the steps. This may well be the first easy-to-board ski boat. No need to climb over seats to get in and out. The goal is to have the boat I want yet still have it family-friendly. Best of both worlds, I hope. The steps are attached to the...
