its not just those of us of a "certain age"... I am of "uncertain age" (47), and have a list at least that long.... I pick off a few items here and there.... clean yard Drain boat cover that collapsed in last storm (did this morning....) install new boat covers (will wait til residual moisture...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

Thats what I have coming. Honestly, at this point, anything is probably better than what I pulled off. This one was TOAST....

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

well the engine is mostly back together... Still waiting for the exhaust gaskets to show up, along with the carb kit. A new starter should be here on Monday, as long as UPS doesnt keep it in Purgatory for any longer than they usually do.... Old starter is TRASHED.... brushes completely worn...

something new coming in electric OB

curb weight may be the same, but what do the batteries themselves weigh, as compared to the "fuel tank"... electric motors are a hell of a lot lighter than the average engine/transmission combination, especially in a RWD application such as the Hellcat.

something new coming in electric OB

the biggest issue as I see it, and as stated isnt the motor, its the batteries... while you can run out of gas with an internal combustion engine, its very easy to put some more gas in the tank and get back to the dock.... its rather difficult to have a buddy bring out a bucket of electricity to...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

and its starting to look like an engine again.... heads are on and torqued, rockers reinstalled, and the intake is just sitting in the valley (keeps crap outta the engine....) Ill install the intake tomorrow and run a compression test on #4 to make sure we have a good cylinder. The carb kit...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

well, both heads are off and cleaned... just waiting for the damn FedEx dude to show up with the valve seals and head gaskets.... then I can get that all installed..... I hate sitting on my hands waiting for shipments.... Life was so much easier when the parts houses actually stocked parts.....

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

yeah, I am going with Delco plugs in it, MR43T.... having the correct reach should be better all around. The old plugs were a Champion RS12YC, which indeed is a Vortec plug..... somebody done OOPSed that one.... On another note, the second head is off, and I am lapping in the valves for it now...

either that or too long a reach on the plug. if the plug is sitting too deep in the hole, its gonna hit something....

Merc 3.0 belt replacements can be challenging time-wise, but would you,

exactly... one of the motor mounts goes THROUGH the center of the belt. other than that, its an easy job. Not that its HARD, mind you, just need a way to support the engine when you remove the mount.

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

and a quickie of what I believe to be the root cause of the problem.... the wrong spark plugs..... no chance the plug on the left wasnt overheating...... with that many threads in the cylinder, I am lucky to have gotten all six out

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

ok, so the healing starts today..... new valves, intake and exhaust came, along with some other parts.... Machine shops are backlogged for months, so these are just getting lapped in. Not the "best" way, but has worked for decades in many engines in the past. Will work "good enough" for this one...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

That’s what the general thought is. Brought the valve and plug into work and showed our bus mechanic, and he thinks the same. Wrong plug, torched electrode stuck in valve, and that’s all she wrote…. It’s a standard bore and judging by many clues, it’s never been opened before. This one will live...

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

that is the current plan... get the heads done, service everything, and get it wet.....

yep, looks like the same inside as engines Ive been doing since I was a kid.... as you say, nothing special, and definitely not at the top of the heap for performance. If I had my druthers, I would completely redo the motor, (or v-8 swap it) but that isnt in the cards for this year. I want to...

yep. even though it has the plastic "Vortec" valve covers on it, it has a set of 181 heads, which are distinctly non-vortec...... looks like a pair of 3/4 scale smallblock emissions heads.... pistons as well with the small dish and 4 valve reliefs....

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

at this point, its only another head gasket away..... but I dont expect any surprises on that side.

    Houston….. We’ve had a problem…..

Offending valve is out. Seat looks OK, so a quickie valve job, and a set of valves should have me reassembling this monstrosity..... Even if the 4.3 is 3/4 of a small block, the head sure didnt weigh any less...... ahhh good old cast iron...
