    1990 mercruiser 4.3 no spark

Cool Also, and need to be careful with it, got any starter fluid? You sound experienced so I suspect u know how to use it but if never have: squirt a second or so into carb before trying to start is my first step then I get progressively more aggressive if sputtering but not fully catching but...

    1990 mercruiser 4.3 no spark

Making sure the term ‘still not firing’ is understood: * You still have spark at the plug and validated post setting the timing while the engine is being cranked (want to be sure something was not knocked off) * the engine cranks (turns over) strong but does not catch aka run aka fire...

    AQ131 Questions (Spark Issues)

Too funny. I had the same model I bought decades ago. Was one of the more expensive tools other than Snap-On torque wrench if I recall correctly. I only recently gave it to my son for his toolbox, still works great!

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

A loose connection like this can sometimes work (like its tight) and sometimes not (choke will not fully open due to poor connection). The point: post watching what it does, if the choke does fully open this does not mean the loose connection will cause it to not fully open on the next cycle. In...

    Excessive Oil/Grease by Alternator area.

Mustang, I appreciate your positive attitude towards the cleanup. I know as we get older all that bending and twisting can be well, an issue. So here are some of my tips on doing this: Perhaps the most difficult but not so bad is the protection of items. I use plastic bags (like sandwich and...

    07 mercruiser 4.3 no start

Not sure what type of ign / coil you have on an ’07 but here is 'how to' for the VM test Scott mentions. First you need to find the +12VDC wire at the coil. This will be what you are monitoring with the Multimeter. Take the coil wire out of the distributor and ground it in such a way it will not...

    AQ131 Questions (Spark Issues)

Here is more on what Kenny is referring to: it a 4 post Starter Solenoid (vs three – usure what you have). It may be a spade or a post with nut. This no. 4 terminal on the solenoid gets +12VDC only when the starter is engaged. See pic and this thread link for more info on how that all works.

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Oh boy, I feel for ya. This engine was severely overheated > the white smoke I suspect was steam (did it have an odor?) and the crackling sound you assumed was electrical popping was instead the metal of the engine expanding. While its good the motor turns over, I suspect your compression...

    Need help finding plug wires

Agree and even with molded plugs things can tear apart with enough force so, I always use a dielectric silicone grease on the boot to help seal it and make it easier to remove. As the old commercial used to say “a little dab’ll do ya” :)

    Excessive Oil/Grease by Alternator area.

Mustang, I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest some additional activity. Fixing the leak is certainly a priority along with that unused ground wire. And based on your engine / sterndrive combination I assume you can trailer your boat home > i.e. get it out of the water and onto your...

    1990 mercruiser 4.3 no spark

I am not familiar with these systems so difficult to offer advice. However, a search of this excellent forum yielded a comprehensive post (link) on them and how to troubleshoot. Perhaps that can help. Good luck!

    Manifold Change

While I too used screwdrivers for years to break the stuck hose, a few years ago I got a set of these (link) and never used anything else. The one in the bottom pic has an offset that makes it easy to get around the circumference. And they are inexpensive. More: there are some tips to...

    Excessive Oil/Grease by Alternator area.

In addition to the leak it looks like you have a potential wiring issue > see blow up of your pic from the bottom of the bilge. Even if it has been abandoned and no longer in use, never good to have loose metal bits able to fly around the engine compartment.

    VP 5.7GXi-HF fuel pressure

While you are doing this service, suggest paying attention to the pressure regulator as well. See this service bulletin (link) regarding the replacement of the screen with an “E” clip. And see this thread for that link.

5.0 GXi-J fuel pump relay keeps tripping

Here is another thought and an old school way to find shorts (or other high current draw devices, ie exceeding what they should) while minimizing risk of further damage: use a flasher relay. It’s been decades since I have done this but I do recall having one of the guys show me to hook up a...

5.0 GXi-J fuel pump relay keeps tripping

While I have never measured it, since its on a 20A fuse, the combined pumps probably draw somewhere around 12 to 14 amps. I am about to de-winterize my boat and can measure it if still in question.

5.0 GXi-J fuel pump relay keeps tripping

I am going to offer some advice that you may not like but I am doing so out of concern for your safety. The temps and symptoms you are experiencing are dangerous as in electrical fire dangerous. Hopefully, it is something simple like an over drawing fuel pump. My strong advice is to not take...
