afraid of Very Bad things/merc outdrive

so, i'm out for thr last ride of the year, and decide to run wide open. everything's fine, then the boat loses power as the engine revs. i immediately shut down, and when i restart, it won't go into gear. shift cable is smooth, but nothing happens; no grinding, nothing. strange thing is is that...

New-ish to me boat, what should i do for the winter?

'86 merc 470 that i got in may. It has performed admirably so far. Only repair was a u-joint bellows and shift cable, for which the PO had "fixed" by disconnecting the SIS and lowering the idle...anyway... Before next season I'd like to do anything that could be considered maintenance. I need...

    merc 470 cooling issue

Sorry in advance. Since I know this info is on here somewhere--i'm on a blackberry and am having a tough time with searching... Anyway, merc 170. Noticed a bit ago that overflow level was low on coolant. Refilled last week, and after some fairly hard running noticed that the overflow was again...

    Merc 470 cooling problem (?)

Noticed that the coolant level in the overflow tank of my 170 was low a bit ago. Had been running fine, no issues with overheating. Coolant in the actual reservoir was fine. So i added coolant to the overflow tank, took it for a spin, saw some smoking in the engine compt. coolant had leaked...

replacing boot on alpha 1 lower unit?

while trying to diagnose a shifting problem (having a hard time with SIS--PO had disconnected it), i seem to have sprung a leak in one of the boots in the lower unit (merc 170, alpha 1 outdrive). there appear to be 2 boots there; this is the upper boot. what is involved in the replacement...

    Merc 470 voltage reg symptoms?

Noticed that, especially right at startup, my voltage meter is in the 16v range. Eventually it will fall to around 14. No other symptoms. Is this a sign of an early failing voltage reg, or am i being paranoid? any way to check? thanks!

    Shifting prob/Alpha I

So i have a slight issue with the shifting on my new-to-me mercruiser i/o, which i thought was just a simple adjustment (maybe still is, i just can't figure it out). when i'm in forward, i need to move the shift lever slightly into the reverse position to disengage. all gears shift smoothly...

Where to find a nautical chart?

looking to find a navigational chart for the lower potomac. i've seen the noaa ones (i'm looking for #12286), but would like something that includes POIs--marinas, restaurants, etc. i saw someone with a "road atlas" type book that looked like it fit the bill, but have been unable to find...

    Where to buy screw/helical anchor/mooring?

I'm looking to make a good mooring for my 19' bowrider. It will be in approx 5' of water with a hard, sandy bottom. I'm thinking that a screw or helical type anchor would be best, like this: http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=88163F this would be a permanent mooring. Any thoughts on the...

How bad is a 470, really?

Ok, I didn't even know about the "quirks" of this engine until recently, and I have some idea of the responses that i'll get to this, but I've read a lot about it here and on other forums. Despite the negative rep, I'm still considering buying a boat with one of these. Reason being, in the...

    common engine sizes?

i mentioned in another post that i'm looking to buy an 18-21' i/o bowrider, late '80's-early '90's. i've been looking around, and can't find a list of common engine sizes used in boats of this size/era. i'm looking for common engine sizes (cid and liters), # cylinders, and hp. if i knew...

?'s on buying a "new" boat...what to look for?

in the market to buy my first boat, though i grew up around them. i'm looking for a late 80's/early '90's 18-21' bowrider, i/o, to be used in brackish water, likely trailered (though i'd rather not...we'll see) when i won't be around. boat will be used for cruising, skiing, and fishing...
