Which rear nav light position do I use?

I have a 1973 18’ I/O. The boat has a two sided white position light. In the “anchor” selection, both sides light up. In the other selection, only the forward lights up. I have found information pertaining to sailboats which discusses masthead lights verses anchor lights. It...

Outdrive does not want to re -install in boat

I just went through this. Do everything these guys told you. Once mine got that close, I used a size 12 specialty tool. Just enough to get some threads showing and then I used my ratchet to snug it up the rest of the way. I think you need to rotate your prop counterclockwise to...

2008 3.0L AlphaOne no water to engine

Are you not getting water when running on muffs or is the boat in the water? If on muffs, I had an issue with no water (Walmart muffs), just steam. I then used a set of Quicksilver/Mercruiser muffs and voila, plenty of water squirting out of the main coolant line.

Trim tab anode replacement for Mercruiser part number 34127A1?

I have the 165hp inline 6. The drive serial number is 3505794. I am purely in fresh water. How did you come up with the Sierra cross reference? Is there a website I can use in the future? Thanks for the help.

Trim tab anode replacement for Mercruiser part number 34127A1?

I have a high rake prop on my 1973 MC-1 drive so that means the factory trim tab anode (part number 34127A1) does not work with the newer style props. Is there an offset trim tab made for these older drives? Do the Alpha 1 anode trim tabs fit the MC-1?

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

Thanks for all the suggestions. I borrowed my neighbors engine hoist. Since my drive has a loop that I can suspend it from, I just jacked it up, gave the prop a little whirl and she slid right in. I think another option would be to modify a motorcycle jack if your drive does not have...

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

I did put new O-rings on the driveshaft but I don’t think the o ring by the splines on the driveshaft is required. I think I read that somewhere on this forum.

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

Thanks. I know pre-Alpha is a misnomer but I did not want to state a specific drive when I was not 100% sure and impair the assistance you folks give. I have heard of a couple of different drives that existed prior to the Alpha gen 1. Mine has the hole at the top of the upper gear case...

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

Bottom of the alignment tool. With what you guys see in the pics and my description of the ease of seating the tool, is the engine slightly out of alignment? My gut feeling is that the ujoint is hanging up somewhere. I did rotate the spline off the ujoint that goes into the engine...

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

Here is a picture of the alignment tool. The first pic is the top of the tool. The second is the bottom. It does slide in and out fairly easily and fully seats.

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

The drive slid off easily but I ordered an alignment tool. I will have it in a few days. I will post back. Thanks for the guidance.

    Trouble reinstalling pre-alpha drive

I pulled my drive to check the bellows job I did last year and to check the impeller. Now I can’t get the drive back on. The pic shows the furthest I can get it which is obviously not even close. What am I doing wrong? It is not a shift shoe issue as I am not even close to those...

1973 Mercruiser 165hp sterndrive gasket kit?

I pulled my drive off to check how well my first bellows replacement job went last year. I am trying to find the correct outdrive gasket kit but all the ones I find are for newer pre Alpha drives. My serial number is 3605794. Aren’t the Mercruiser kits simply “universal” nowadays with...

    Mercruiser in-line 6 165hp water reversal kit

I was reading through the archives and stumbled across a post that solved a mystery for me: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/165hp-inline-6-water-flow-reversal-kit-for-exhaust-manifold.613347/ Now I know why my open loop cooling system does not match the Seloc manual. The main cooling...

1973 Mercruiser in-line 6 water temp gauge issue

Hi guys, I recently replaced the water pocket, impeller assembly, lower unit, bellows, upper bellows, water shutter, manifold gasket, elbow gasket, etc. The engine is running much cooler now in the 140 degree range. The water temp reads accurately when the gauge is working. On any...

Mercruiser part 27-46401 vs going to NAPA

My exhaust gasket failed on my Mercruiser 165hp in-line 6 (1973). Can I just get a new gasket for a 1973 Chevy at NAPA or is the Mercruiser gasket specific and required?

Last minute question after bellows job and shift cable repair

Hey guys, I just reinstalled my sterndrive on my 1973 Cobalt. It’s a pre-alpha drive. From what I can tell, it slid on easily. I have the shift feet lined up and they mated properly. I put new gear fluid in via the drain plug until it came out the vent screw. The thing that...

1973 pre alpha u joint bellows orientation?

Hey guys, I’m slowly getting this thing back together. Feels good to finally in the reassembly stage. There are two labels on the u joint bellows. In the pic, it “top forward” on the lip of the bellows. Simple enough except there’s another label that says “top aft” on the other...
