    Cooling Hose Fit Problems

I am custom building the engine from a bare block so no serial number. However, the location of all fittings and the T Stat Housing are the same as a 1996 Mercruiser 5.7L/5.7LX. The distance from the center line of the oil cooler to the center line of the T Stat Housing on my engine is the same...

    Cooling Hose Fit Problems

The PS oil cooler to T Stat Hsg reaches the PS oil cooler but it doesn't get above the level of the intake manifold so it is nowhere near reaching the T Stat Hsg. Not sure what I will do with this hose. For the other hose, I ran across an old hose in my used pile that seems to work for the...

    Cooling Hose Fit Problems

So, the engine stand mockup continues and of course issues continue as well. I bought new hoses and have fit problems with two of them. Essentially, this is a 1996 Mercruiser 5.7L engine. First, the T Stat Housing to Exhaust Manifold on the Port side is too short (see pic below). I ordered...

Knowing when to say when on outdrive

Check for corrosion inside the housing before paying for welding it. I had 6 hydrofoil fin holes welded shut and ground smooth for $30. Later I found a couple of corrosion points inside the housing that looked like surface but ended up going all the way through when I cleaned them off. I...

    Alpha Paint Question

First, I should explain that my posts of questions seem to be jumping between topic areas. They are as I have things in my shop organized so I can easily switch to another part of the project and because I am simultaneously working on the engine assembly, alpha rebuild, and the...

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

Any thoughts on the quality of a Reman by National Carburetors?

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

Speedway is on backorder too... Bending the tube is the hard part.

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

I saw that new one on EBay but the guy has some pretty negative reviews in the past months. Thoughts on a Reman (by National Carburetor) one since there is one of those on EBay also? Thanks for the info on the 1410. It is out of stock anyway..

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

Seems to be a shortage of carburetors. Both new and reman seem to be out of stock almost anywhere. I did find a 1410 in stock and assume it would work fine on the 5.7L. Oops, that one is out of stock too...

    Great, thanks for the info...

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

Thanks for the pic. I am going to run the manual pump but your comment applies equally to that I would think. But not sure if there is that combo for the Edelbrock or Holley in the parts diagrams anywhere.

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

I don't have a fuel line yet from the mechanical pump to the carb. I prefer hard lines but will go with hose with swaged fittings if I can find the right length.

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

I haven't bought a replacement carb yet but was wondering if the standard Mercruiser fuel line fits either the Edelbrock or Holley carbs recommended above. If not, what do most people do for the line from the fuel pump to the carb?

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

Hey, that is pretty cool. I assume the Racing Carb CFM calculation is for engines with higher lift cams then since the Xtreme Marine cam is higher than stock lift.

    Ignition Installation Questions TB V

Weird that Merc didn't follow the normal orientation for GM 350 engines that has been around since before the 60's. The firing order matches what is written on the cap which makes it easy when changing plug wires. That portion is pretty slick from Merc. They even numbered the cap for standard...

    Ignition Installation Questions TB V

That's what I was thinking but didn't know if I was missing something. Next question, I know the connector on the top is for the knock sensor connections and the lower left is for the distributor and coil. What is the missing connector on the lower right used for and is it required?

    Ignition Installation Questions TB V

First issue is a confusing anomaly with the distributor. This is a new Mercruiser OEM distributor. From pictures I have seen on other engines, the area where the ICM mounts on the distributor is pointed towards the Port side and the wire terminals and optical "points" sensor are pointed to the...

    Speedometer Connected to GPS Device?

I have a hardtop mounted GPS antenna for best accuracy and reliability. Both my Standard Horizon VHF Radio and Garmin Fishfinder have NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 capability so why not use them. I am an electrical engineer so wiring is not big deal.

    Carb Recommendations for 5.7L Vortec?

Is 600 cfm sufficient for a 5.7L vortec engine? Old school Rochester QJet's were typically 650 cfm on a stock 350 engine. I have the Xtreme Marine Comp Cam with a bit more lift (.488/.495). Again not looking for high performance.
