    Wiring help

Thanks for posting the wire sizes and I was finally able run the calculation of needed wire size using this link. Here is what I found: Amp and inverter at 4 seems fine. Based on 85A, 15 feet of run, 12VDC and 3% drop yields 4G. Is 15 feet, correct? From the picture it seems less than that but...

    4.3gl dieseling

You seem to be familiar with dieseling not only by the title but also your description of it running backwards and sucking in water. You know the sound: turn off the key it keeps running for a second or few but a little funky and then a sort of loud sigh when it kicks backwards and if you were...

    Wiring help

After a night’s sleep I realize that you must have been talking about your OEM installed DC dist. panel, not an AC one. No, do not need to see that. And for the extension cord I also think that you are directly using that for our pellet BBQ, which only has a small wattage fan on it and the toy...

    Wiring help

Here are my thoughts: It seems your fuse and bkr sizes may be too small. Example your 1000W Inverter could draw 1000W/12V = 83 Amps and for a short burst a lot more. But that is only one factor. The Wire Size is also a determining factor. Here is a link to the Blue Sea website that walks thru...

    Wiring help

Cool, so far looking good IMO. 2 things in my mind still to tease out (1) the marked up dwg with fuses and (2) should the AC Ground also be bonded to the DC Neg side? If there was shore power the answer is yes, but I cannot (yet) find if should be if inverter only. However, I think yes, as in...

Volvo Penta 305 - Squeak and Rattle

I am going out on a limb here or rather suggest you do. Please let me explain. You have a nice solid boat and just dumped a ton of money into it doing some good things. So don’t give up the ship yet, no pun intended. Here is my philosophy on squeaks fm my automotive days: If a bearing is making...

    Wiring help

First off, looks ok and I see you elected to have the “ACR” Off switch installed on the ACR Gnd. Some follow up questions: Do you have appropriately sized ckt breakers and fuses where needed? I do not see any in your picture in post 1. There is a 1000W inverter. Is it an Inverter / Charger...

    Wiring help

Makes sense, was wondering how you connected Alt. output to House side :-) I'll print it out and take a look and get back to you. I am going to assume wire sizing is correct but if you are concerned about that mark it up with the wire gauge sizes...

Loss of power on VP 5.7GI

This is great you found the root cause which based on the symptoms was unexpected. Would you please post what led you to suspect water in the gas and how you tested it to validate. This will help others with similar symptoms to hopefully get to a quicker resolution. Thanks!

    Wiring help

I am going to take a stab here as I am currently developing my plan to add a house battery with an ‘Add A Battery’ ACR. While your description sounds ok it’s hard to tell without a wiring diagram. Can you generate one? Even if it’s a hand drawn and a clear picture taken and posted that will...

Volvo Penta 3.0 4 cylinder engine won't start

You may already understand there are 2 x TDC but only one that matters for the distributor placement. But your post made me think otherwise. Thus, just in case, please see this link. It’s the Compression Stroke being at TDC for No. 1 Cylinder that you are trying to achieve.

    Coil Question

You’re welcome. There are lots of good and kind folks on this forum who spend many hours every week trying to help people like yourself. Why? Because we love boating and desire to see others enjoy it as well. We understand the high cost of boating so we help each other and anyone else save money...

Volvo Penta 3.0 4 cylinder engine won't start

Well, the dist. is out so it’s doing it the TDC way. However, there are two times the No. 1 Piston is at TDC for a complete cycle since this is a 4-stroke engine. You need to take off the valve cover to ensure the no. 1 cylinder valves are closed. Another method is the finger in the spark plug...

    Coil Question

Some more while I am at it 😊 Here is a useful web site for parts look up, etc. > the VP web site at this link. Put in your engine serial no. and will get a selection of the various categories for your engine. Very helpful in figuring out part nos. I did with your serial no. 4110102051 and it...

    Coil Question

R Terminal. As stated in both posts 7 & 9, this terminal should only have +12VDC during the start cycle, specifically only when the starter solenoid is ‘kicked in.’ The movement of the solenoid causes the pinion gear on the starter motor to engage the engine AND closes a contact to cause R to...

    Coil Question

Intermittent problems, especially electrical ones, can be frustratingly hard to solve > its never there when you are looking as you are currently experiencing. While its always more comforting to “find it and fix it” sometimes other approaches are more expedient. Here is how to go about both...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI Exhaust riser won't come up to temp

Just a thought: it’s possible (but not probable) that even a new t-stat is bad (in your case opening too soon). You could swap them and see if the issue follows the new t-stat. If not at least that is ruled out and back to what the heck!

Volvo Penta 3.0 4 cylinder engine won't start

Do you have a Multimeter? A better test of the coil is: Disconnect all the wires from the coil including the high-tension lead. Measure the resistance between the (+) and (-) terminals > should read about 1 to 2 Ohms (if 0.5 that is ok too). Measure the resistance between the (+) terminal and...
