Twin Merc V8 and different fuel usage

One or 2 tanks? Since that value is calculated, might be able to figure out actual burn between the motors by keeping track of miles traveled/gallons required to fill tank. Every car that I've owned has had an optimistic MPG display that doesn't correlate with actual mpg.

did you fix the voltage to the coil?

Bad engine coupler or spun prop hub?

I've had weeds wrapped around the prop that made it behave similarly. Shouldn't, but did.

    Am I just nuts???????

Cool, if you just want a way to waste some time then go for it. Flipping a boat for no profit that I have no intention of using doesn't make sense to me, but it's not my time. I've got a list of time-wasting projects to last me another 20 years. If I was going to do all the work though, might as...

This first. Unless you retrofitted to a points system.

...$5k worth of resto. If you feel like a project, buy something newer and transplant that into your current hull.

He's got the pump on the bench...why not just hook 12v to it?

No Spark on 1988 4.3 ltr. engine

No, don't change the ignition coil. A bad ignition coil isn't why he's getting 10.4v at the ignition coil

    New boat with merc 5.7

That's a bit different though. I said initially; if it isn't starting and you're getting timing light flashes, I'll move to fuel. I wonder what a poor man's gap tester would be--old plug that you really widen the gap on? On my outboards/small engines I usually can't be bothered to find my gap...

    New boat with merc 5.7

I'm partial to a timing light initially. Doesn't tell you the quality of the spark, but if you're getting a steady flash you're likely dealing with fuel. Esp in an electronic ignition.

    Help prop an old boat?

Also, getting the trim sorted first is important. Your wot rpms will be low if you're plowing

    New boat with merc 5.7

A couple of teaspoons. Don't waste your time on additives. If you have water in your tank, it needs to be physically removed. Do you have a fuel water separator?

No Spark on 1988 4.3 ltr. engine

no, and no real reason to. the troubleshooting basically tests each component. each step that you reach ensures that all the prior components work. look up how to do a voltage drop test to determine where your wiring issues are. 10.4v at the coil sucks.

Have you tried measuring the voltage across the plug pins?

    Are plastic props junk?

I've had mixed luck with those. better bet is timing light or multimeter or the optical tachs.

    Another prop slipping thread

if you can see the driveshaft behind the engine, it won't spin if the coupler is bad. Have you greased the coupler ever?

    2002 Chaparral 286 SSI

I mean, a carb *definitely* isn't as easy to start as FI. Mine is known for draining the fuel bowl after a while, so to not have my boat act like it looks I need to run the fuel pump manually. Most carbs have a personality; they need to be pumped a certain number of times, throttle set in a...

    2002 Chaparral 286 SSI

advice would have been to water test it, running on muffs is worthless. is that a 186?
