    Rochester quadrajet

This sounds more like a problem with jet sizing and or linkage adjustments. My experience with QJets has always been that you never have to do any bending or adjusting like that. Got any friends that run them on cars that know how to set them up?

    Transom plate question

If it were me, I would just find a shop and have them TIG it. By the time you get the right stuff and figure out how to do it, way cheaper and faster as Rick points out.

    Little more valve lift

For what its worth. I went with a 1996 GM Truck Block, Vortec Heads (with machined valve bosses for the higher lift CAM), Vortec Manifold, Xtreme Marine roller cam, double roller timing chain and gears (slight block grinding for chain clearance), roller lifters using dog bones (as opposed to...

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

Well, mine isn't dyno'd. I had the builder do the GM Vortec block and heads and I did the rest. My comment to the builder in giving me the block work up was that 300hp was my top end limit so he provided pistons etc. that weren't over the top in performance. I went with the Xtreme Marine...

    Color Opinions??

The Black color in powder coat is the most UV stable at least in Prismatic Colors. Silver in powder coat requires a clearcoat to be reasonably stable under UV then it gets spendy. Might be better to blast and base/clear I guess. I will check with my GF as she is better with image modification...

    Color Opinions??

Since I disassembled the entire boat hardtops and all, I have the aluminum rub rail and the upper trim pieces off the boat. I was planning to look into media bead blasting the aluminum before either paint or powder coat.. If I paint them, I will go the alodine route before paint but powder...

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

Hey thanks for the info... Brings to mind that I should count the teeth on my lower gears to see if it is 1.50 or 1.47 but unless somebody changed them (or the whole lower unit) they should be for 1.50 since my serial number is for a 1985 model year...

Alpha One - Stainless Upper Steering Pin or Not?

I don't know the history of the boat but it came from Colorado so likely all fresh water.... Yup, will reuse the one I have and just clean it up...

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

Well, the HD gears are pretty expensive and I don't pan on running the boat hard (cruising mostly) so thinking I will just stay with the gear set I have.. Thanks all..

    Color Opinions??

I had my window frames powder coated semi-gloss black and now looking at color for my rub rail and hardtop trim. The originals were of course anodized aluminum and the rub rail had a black insert. I was thinking about going with the semi-gloss black on the rub rail with a white insert but then...

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

Well, after looking, the only place I could find gears using the Mercruiser part number is Sterndrive Engineering. They don't say Heavy Duty but use the HD Mercruiser part number. The ratio says 1.47 to 1 so just guessing here that they are 1.47 to 1 because they are Heavy Duty?? Mercruiser...

Alpha One - Stainless Upper Steering Pin or Not?

Great, thanks.. The steering arm looks like it was replaced at one time.. In fact, the whole transom plate is very clean with no corrosion at all..

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

Thanks, I will look further into the HD gear set... Yup Scott, I caught the humor....

Alpha One - Stainless Upper Steering Pin or Not?

Finally got around to getting some pics... To me this looks fine so I am thinking its not worth the potential problem that some of the stainless pins seem to have...

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

Ok, thanks... Just thought I would check before assembling.. All of my gears are in good shape and I am putting in a new lower housing, bearing carrier, all new bearings, seals and waterpump..

Alpha One Upper Gears - Are there HD versions?

So, I am getting ready to reassemble the upper unit and was wondering if they make Heavy Duty versions of the gear set. The boat is 22ft hardtop so must be about 3650lbs dry weight, the 5.7L new build should come out right about 300hp, and my current upper gear teeth counts at 1.50 to 1...

Alpha One - Stainless Upper Steering Pin or Not?

I have seen a lot of discussion about changing to stainless but I have also seen a lot of comments about stainless pins not fitting correctly or the threads for the retainer nut don't engage properly. My old pin is in pretty good shape. Its not worn really at all except maybe a little bit of...

Small Hole Repair - Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Thanks, that seemed to be the way to go next. I will drill out those holes again and make a thick batch so it is more like a paste.. I think I might try making a thin batch of poly to "wet" the hole and then immediately add the paste-like thickened resin... I have a couple of countersink that...

Small Hole Repair - Good Idea or Bad Idea?

I cut up some CSM last night as fine as I could get it.. I tried filling some vertical holes (on a horizontal surface) with masking tape over the bottom of the holes.. I had trouble trying to get the strand material down in the hole and some trapped bubbles I think.. I used a small dowel to...
