DIY: Home appliance repair. Shotgun approach to diagnostics and repair.

Recently our clothes washer started a chattering squeak during the spin/rinse cycles. Not good. Something will eventually fail. Pull the front panel, jack up the front with a short 2x4 and observe. Agitation cycle, motor runs CCW. Quiet. Rinse/spin, motor CW. Squeaky noise. Three pulleys...

That was embarassing - glad no one was watching.

...so I'll share it with everyone. Taking the 'ol Durango to gas up. The low fuel lamp flickered once, but went off. Five gallons left. Halfway to the station, surge, sput, die. No start. Wife came with the Cherokee and pulled be home with a tow strap. No codes on the Actron scanner Head...

    Loctite/Henkel rocks

I tried to update my original thread, but my 'Activity' is suffering the same issue as messages. Recap: I discovered my press fit upper drive shaft became non-press fit - twice. My plan and hopeful fix: I installed a pressure gage on my press. I purchased a new upper drive shaft. I contacted...

    Troublesome problem

One year ago I was reassembling my Alpha II after a seal job and noticed the upper drive shaft was loose in the pinion. It's supposed to be a press fit. I cleaned the joint with acetone and applied green 609 cylindrical part retaining Loctite and crossed my fingers. Reassembling again this...

    Another boating expense...probably

I built a 60' marine rail boat lift eight years ago when we got our Miss River place S of Dubuque IA. I pull the last 40' of the rail out in the fall. The first 20' of shore structure sets high and dry....under normal conditions. Well, this year isn't normal. The river was sill iced over when...

eTorque Mild Hybrid Trucks and SUVs

Contemplating my next towing vehicle after my 21 yr old Durango dies. I see FCA and Ford are using a "mild hybrid" electric motor/generator to give a the engine a torque boost at the first 1500-2000 rpm of acceleration. These motors also provide regenerative dynamic engine braking at...

    For you naval history buffs...

Spanish American War battleship plan. 1898 As near as I can count: 2x 12" Turret "rifles" 4x 6" redoubt rifles 2x 6" deck rifles 14 "PDR" (?) guns 2x rapid fire guns Apparently Commodore Dewey, with this sort of ship, made short work of Spanish at Matanzas, Philippines.

Replacement snap rings for Merc U joints?

R&R-ing my gear yoke. The snap rings put up quite a fight. Anyone know where these can be purchased. I can blacksmith them back into shape, but I'd rather use new. Thanks ....oops, can't attach a pic. They are bent open.

New (to me) U joint disassembly trick

Changing out my gear yoke I got stuck, literally, right away. I was trying to push out the second cap, but it kept cocking and hanging up in the yoke. After too many tries I did what I always do when frustrated. I went upstairs and pondered the problem over a beer. "I need some sort of...

    Reuse or replace?

I'm ready to replace my oil seal-grooved gear yoke and seal. I just noticed this grooving in my coupler yoke gimbal bearing surface. Most of the surface is OK. I'm not afraid to dig into my pocket to replace a potentially troublesome part, but I'm on the fence with this one. Thoughts please.

New US tax code is friendly to our household.

I hope this post passes the Mods sniff test. It's not intended to be political. I just wrapped up this year's individual Turbotax. We are paying a lower tax rate by 2.5%. I've had smoke coming out my ears listing to the wailing and whining about smaller, or negative refunds this year. I've...

Just now · The Death of Cable TV...at our house

When we built our place 30 yrs ago I had a huge Archer TV antenna hanging here. Three channels. Six years later we got AT&T "AT Home" which became Mediacom Cable. TV became $40/mo for 40+ channels we didn't use. Then we got a Roku streaming TV a couple years ago. We used the cable mostly for...

....Think I'd have learned by now.

Einstein supposedly said "I“the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. Questions about if he really said this, but it's also a good definition for stupidity. At least every two years I smoke my snowblower's auger drive belt. And I change...

Need some general direction - for my neighbors kid

Sorry about the lack of s/n etc. I'm flying blind here. My neighbor's son bought a money pit Mid '80's Bayliner cuddy 18-19' 3.0L OMC drive. He has a serious oil leak which I'm pretty sure is the oil seal in the front cover. I agreed to show him how to replace it - meaning I'd do it later this...

    Keep track of your shims...

...and write down your last shim pack measurements. I pulled my drive shaft assy this afternoon in pursuit of a puddle of lube in my DS bellows...after a new seal last spring. The out drive was in the garage, so I dropped the DS into a plastic bag to keep the lube from dripping on the wife's...

Not a bad way to go...

This showed up on my FB feed. I think I could do this, as long as I knew someone would take on my faithful Aussie Zeke at the end. https://www.nola.com/news/2019/01/af...HiU8KM5YtWSPis

    Vaping vs. smoking

If you're a smoker this may interest you. My 29 yr old son has smoked cigarettes for 10 yrs. Wife and I wish he would quit, but since I burn 3-4 robusto stogies/day (Bill Clinton style: Don't inhale) I have to choose my words carefully. Last Summer the heads of AMA, FDA, American Cancer...
