Gonna be a while longer before I can splash our boat.....

Midwest flooding has cost many a lot of loss. Lucky we're just inconvenienced. But I'll still whine. We finally opened our Dubuque IA Miss river place yesterday. 19' gauge, just low enough to cross the road to get in. Pic shows 18.6' today. Nine feet above normal, seven feet above where I can...

Necessity is the mother of invention

Hillbilly shimming fixture Pretty confident this will work. Based on the assumption the current pinion/shaft/shims combo is correct. And I believe this is correct. The wear pattern on the FWD gear and undamaged pinion teeth is fine. This rig repeats at a .021" feeler. I'll torque the new...

Necessity is the mother of invention

kenny nunez You right, kinda. Not a pin hole, more like bird shot. Seems the recirc pump had been dribbling on the cover for some time and rotted it from the outside. I've got JB or some kick a*s West Marine 404 high density filler + their epoxy/resin. Excellent stuff for metal bonding. The top...

How not to dock a boat

I think you may need a Facebook account to view this. Hopefully not. I've seen this in the flesh a time or two. https://www.facebook.com/BadBoatDrivers/videos/2323045674603323/

3.0L Crankcase front cover oil seal removal

This is a boating technical topic. Sorry for the rule stretch. the GM 3.0L covers many experts, so I'm chumming wide here. Getting ready to pull the balancer on my neighbor's 3.0L Cobra. I really, really don't want to remove the front cover...loosen oil pan, etc. I recall a past post where a...

Necessity is the mother of invention

I'm again invoking Scott Danforth , kenny nunez , Lou C for Cobra know-how. So far this 31 yr. old outdrive has looked very good.....until now. The propshaft pinion is at the point of catastrophic failure. I'll deliver the bad news to my neighbor when I'm finished here. I found Sierra and GLM...

Necessity is the mother of invention

First, sorry about cloning my original post https://forums.iboats.com/forum/engine-repair-and-maintenance/omc-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives/10698896-need-some-general-direction-for-my-neighbors-kid on fixing my neighbor's '88 Cobra bent prop shaft which hasn't been generating any 'latest...

Tracing an old boat's title and registration...?

I'm replacing the prop shaft in my neighbor pal's son's '88 Cobra. We just had a chat. Seems the son bought the boat and spaced off the paperwork. Now a problem since Iowa has new reg. stickers this year. The kid (third owner) needs to do his part by shaking down the seller for the...

couple questions about U joint bellow replacement on Alpha One

Adhesive under all hose clamps. None at the aft end of the drive shaft bellows. Clips around the hose clamped ends of the bellows. Their intent is to ground the hose clamps to avoid corrosion. Strange, since the clamps are SS.

Need some general direction - for my neighbors kid

I split the outdrive. Man, that was a knock-down-drag-out I ended up hanging the drive from the lifting eye/hoist and pounding off the lower case with an oak block and 3# machinist's maul. The water tube seal was really, really sealing. Another question: How does the gear lube communicate...

Need some general direction - for my neighbors kid

As mentioned first, I speak fluent Alpha Gen II. Now I'm learning Cobra. So far I've learned: Remove the drive. Measure the depth of the water in the DS bellows. Other findings: Gimbal bearing seems OK. Well greased and good for service in my mind. Unis also look OK. Also well greased. No lube...

    Stern drive concerns

I couldn't find your drive, but this is probably close. Item #20. Gasket, not an O ring.

How to tell if rear motor mounts are bad

Try moving the gimbal bearing per above suggestions. Tapping the tool's handle upward would be my choice. It's difficult to get much bearing swivel with the 1.010" pilot in the engine coupler. The bearing is 1.375" inside diameter. Some suggest using a 1 3/8" pipe or dowel inserted in the...

Alpha one Gen 2 gimbal bearing replacement

Yep. I'z too lazy to dig out the manual. Bad move when Chris is above the water. I'll learn. Eventually. Maybe.

Transcendental flotation. I'd bet Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh is on the big boat.

DIY: Home appliance repair. Shotgun approach to diagnostics and repair.

Recently our clothes washer started a chattering squeak during the spin/rinse cycles. Not good. Something will eventually fail. Pull the front panel, jack up the front with a short 2x4 and observe. Agitation cycle, motor runs CCW. Quiet. Rinse/spin, motor CW. Squeaky noise. Three pulleys...

That was embarassing - glad no one was watching.

...so I'll share it with everyone. Taking the 'ol Durango to gas up. The low fuel lamp flickered once, but went off. Five gallons left. Halfway to the station, surge, sput, die. No start. Wife came with the Cherokee and pulled be home with a tow strap. No codes on the Actron scanner Head...

    Loctite/Henkel rocks

I tried to update my original thread, but my 'Activity' is suffering the same issue as messages. Recap: I discovered my press fit upper drive shaft became non-press fit - twice. My plan and hopeful fix: I installed a pressure gage on my press. I purchased a new upper drive shaft. I contacted...

    New to me 3.8L OMC w/Stringer 800 - What should I check/replace before launch?

As I recall the Stringer's tilt is driven by an electric motor that powers a worm gear drive on the port side of the outdrive. If there are worn parts in the worm gearbox, they could cause binding. A quick diagnostic check would be removing the tilt motor from the inside of the transom and see...

    Stern drive question

That seal carrier can be a bear. A grizzly bear with time. I fabed a slide hammer puller from two lengths of 1/4" aluminum rod per the pic. I use my bearing retainer removal tool as the slide hammer, and the hose clamp to keep the rod's hooks in the seal retainer holes. With effort I've...
