    Polish Outboard Muffler

I have a neighbor that works nights so he sleeps during the day. I usually let him know a day or two ahead of time when I'm going to fire up the boat in the spring so as not to disturb him. This spring I hung a five gallon bucket as shown in the picture and it cuts down the exhaust noise a...

Help us help you select a prop

There are three posts in a row where the question was asked "what prop is best for me?" I don't know about everyone but my response is "pick one -- your guess is as good as mine!" How about giving us something to work with! Remember, we can't see your boat, we can't see your engine (year, HP...

    Re: Wiring Diagram

Re: Wiring Diagram Here's a diagram for a "generic" instrument panel. Your's will be very close to this. Most small boat manufacturers don't have wiring diagrams and if they do, they generally aren't published anywhere.

    Oil Bargain

I was at my local Wally store yesterday and although we in the tundra have 14-inches of ice on our lakes, I strolled through the fishing/boating aisle and by golly if they didn't have Pennzoil semi-synthetic two-stroke oil marked down from $11.46 to $9.00, then marked down again to $7.00. I...

    Unsecured Load

We periodically discuss the proper way to secure a boat on the trailer. Here's an example of what can happen when it's not done correctly. I apologize for the picture. It was from a Car & Driver magazine where they showed some "trailering Oops!". Not only did this accident cause damage to the...

    Strange Looking Prop

I was looking at props on the Merc web site and found this one. Must be new technology! d:)

    Navman Fuel Flow Monitor Deliveries

I recently ordered a NAVMAN 2100 fuel flow monitor (not from iBoats  ) and after a week of hearing nothing, I inquired about availability. I was told we don't really know. Shipments have been small quantities and sporadic. If any of you are thinking about buying one of these on-line...

Re: Johnson 60 HP 92 Wont start anymore (II)

Re: Johnson 60 HP 92 Wont start anymore (II) If the top two plugs are oily and wet that's a sign of weak spark on those two cylinders. Or the needle and seat in those two carbs are not sealing when the float bowl is full which causes an overly rich mixture. The fuel filter will not remain full...

    Tracker Targa wiring

The manufacturers rarely have one but you might start there. Otherwise you need to track the wires down. You will have a NAV switch that controls the bow and stern lights. You likely have a live well switch. An accessory switch, interior lights, and livewell light. This is a three year old...

    70hp won't crank

The answer is yes. Drop the lower unit and then try. If it now turns, the lower unit is locked up. If you still can't turn it over the power head is seized.

    Check your trailer

Yesterday I witnessed an incident where someone made a whole series of trailering errors. This person made a rather quick stop (not panic by any means) for a red light. The winch strap was OVER the bow stop rather than under it and there were no stern tie downs. You should be able to guess what...

    Another Smart Tab Story

I recently installed Smart Tabs on a 2004 Alumacraft Navigator 165CS which is a very stern heavy boat. It was originally powered with a 40 HP Evinrude that obviously struggled to get on plane but otherwise performed ok. As it turns out, I repowered the boat with a 75 HP Merc two stroke before...

    Four stroke reliability

Yesterday I had my boat in a shop getting a re-power done. I was keeping an eye on the tech doing the work but my attention was drawn toward the back of the shop where a group of engine blocks was neatly arranged. I managed to get a closer look and counted 18 four stroke blocks with varying...

    98 Merc 75HP

I just purchased this engine and am wondering if there any "weak links" other than a tendency to plug up the tell tale. My research has turned up very little. I'll fess up to being a JohnyRude guy so I admittedly know little about Mercs other than having to wrench on my fishing partners 50. I...

    Horsepower or torque

We often see TV commercials and printed adds about about brand "X" has more horsepower and/or torque than brand "y". Here's an interesting very real comparison of new vs old technology. Honda Ridgeline (225 HP/250 lb/ft of torge vs a 2002 Chevy S10 (190 HP/250 lb/ft of torque and towing...

1984 50hp Evinrue top plug fouls???

It is not likely that motor had its horsepower increased by 50%. If you suspect a bad plug, swap them. I doubt thats the problem. Start with a compression check. If that's ok, do a spark check. It spark is ok, move to the fuel system. Check fuel flow. If pump is ok, Remove carbs, disassemble...

    Another Prop Question

Your assumption is correct. Stainless props are indeed more efficient than aluminum hence the rise in RPM. Diameter is not as much of a factor on RPM as is pitch. The 15-pitch stainless would have probably been the better choice.
