1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks, that will save some money. Any tips for taping and pulling tape timing? I'll go back and re-read your thread. And any issues with filling thr gouge with hairy PB instead of layers of CSM?

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Learned today that having the trailer in deeper is not better when trying to put thr boat back on. I'll have a project over the next couple of weeks to knock down the sharp edges on the trailer between the rollers and to fix this 8" long gouge. I'm finally going to try my hard at spraying...

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

Idle air screws were set per Cliff's book...maybe I'll look over that procedure again. Where is a vacuum port to check the vacuum at? As stated in the original post, timing is correct. Just for good measure I double checked it again this morning - spot on 8 degrees BTDC at 600-650 RPM idle...

    Tight Steering

There should be zerk fittings to allow you to pump grease into the upper and lower steering pins.

Can the base of engine work? Two to bolts under engine are rusted and can

Push the alignment tool more. You should feel a solid clunk when it's all the way in and the step-up in the diameter of the bar contacts the gimbal bearing.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

Pulled the QJ today and tore it all the way down - even pulled the idle air tubes again. I blew out all the passages and chased all the small orifices with wire. There was some crud in the bowl and in the inlet filter that I cleaned out. Someone mentioned the needle valve's wire clip and...

    Bellow Replacement

No need to buy the expensive Mercruiser tool if you have (or can buy) an extra deep well 9/16" socket. Here is the one I bought. If you get this one, just be sure to pull out the rubber insert.

    1975 Formula F18

It's hideous...in a cool way. Regarding your main question...some will say no, you're going to die and kill everyone on board the next time you go out in it. Some will say sure, 10 more years before you've got to worry. Only you can make the call, as only you know how hard you'll beat it out...

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

Thanks for the explanation - makes sense. I'll mess around with that on Friday and report back. When I had it on muffs Saturday, closing the choke plate any more than it already was made it want to stall.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

@jimmbo , ok so what do you suggest I look for as the issue causing the dribble and/or rough running at idle after running the engine for a while? Seems like you know a ton about these.

Pretty sure mine is a marine unit - it has the overflow nipple.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

Casting number is 17080561. Not sure if it's original, but doubt it, since that number comes back as a 1980 California Pontiac. It did have the aluminum Mercruiser tag on it, but that was under a bolt and could have been transferred.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

The dribble? Possible, but I'd be surprised. When I ran it on muffs in the driveway Saturday morning, it was dribbling when I first fired it up from sitting cold all week. My rebuild kit from Cliffs came with 2 gaskets and he said to use the thick one, which I did. Possible it could be...

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

It's mechanical. I'm guessing I'll have to fab up a hard line with the gauge between the pump and the carb.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

OK, so we're probably onto something then. Seeing as the float is new, I doubt it's absorbed fuel. I'll plan to pull the carb and check the float level and also look at the valve and seat. I'll also see if I can start sourcing the parts to put a pressure gauge on the fuel line - @Scott...

I'll have to try that next time - not sure.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

When I did the rebuild (per Cliff's book), I did pull out the idle air tubes and cleaned out underneath them. Now that you guys mention it, yes, there was fuel dribbling from the center of the venturis at idle when I ran it on muffs yesterday morning with the spark arrestor off. Is that not a...

    mercruiser lower

Could have been you didn't have your shifter and drive's shift shoe in the right position when you tried putting together. Could be the engine needed aligning before stabbing the drive.

Mercruiser 5.7 wanting to stall at idle after driving around

Boat maybe did better yesterday, but I wouldn't say locking the choke open fixed the issue - it still was struggling to idle as I was putting it on the trailer. I'll do some investigation over the coming weeks - I'll look into the choke adjustment, may go ahead and set up a fuel pressure gauge...
