    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Merry Christmas. Nice Del Sol. Which engine is in it? I'm a Honda guy.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I'm just copying what @PC on the Bayou did, and a video I found on YouTube - don't give me the credit for the creativity. Thanks, Buck. Yeah, we are on a similar mission but attacking it from different angles. I appreciate your thread on your restoration, and all the other active members on...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Today I officially got started on the stringers. I started by building a scarf joint fixture for my router by copying this guy's video - it worked out pretty good. I used 3/4" plywood and I put some 1/16" aluminum angle on the edges of my router board so that it would slide against the plywood...

Yessir. All the PB I've made to-date on this project has had "hair" in it.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Today I trimmed the overhanging glass at the top edge of the transom then installed my garboard drain. I used 5200 and SS screws to attach it to the hull, added a piece of 3/4" PVC, then filled the area under the transom with PB and laid a piece of 1708 over it. Today was the first time I...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I was able to get the transom fully tabbed in today (except for the area around the drain). I piped hairy PB around the border, smoothed it out, then laid 2 layers of 1708 over the PB, wet-on-wet-on-wet. Again, I pre-wet the back of all my 1708 on a sheet of plastic before laying it down. I...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

We got home from the weekend trip earlier than expected, so I had my wife help me PB the transom to the boat this afternoon. She did great by helping make PB while I spread it and also helping with the clamping and wiping up the squeeze-out. I should be able to start laying fillets and tabbing...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I tried the eraser wheel and it didn't work on the silicone so I just kept at it with the plastic chisel and WD-40 and got the majority of it off. I got all the small screw/bolt holes on the back of the transom masked and masked around the exhaust holes and keyhole. I attached plastic below...

'96 lund tyee 1850 floor rebuild and foam replacement.

Congrats! I hear ya on the engine taking up space...my shop is so tight now with the boat in here. I was able to get my engine under my welding table, but had to put my welding table (and welder) in the corner far from my 220V outlet. I had to build four 4x4 foot overhead storage lofts in the...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

On the gel coat? That sounds too risky...i think I'll just stick with the plastic chisel and WD-40.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks for the words, and for the tips, guys. I spent 2 hours tonight with a plastic chisel and a can of WD-40 cleaning the silicone off the back of the transom. What a pain. I've probably got another hour worth of scraping tomorrow and then it should be good enough.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I've made a lot of progress this weekend. I got the glass trimmed out of the keyhole, exhaust holes, and all around the edges of the transom, and all the edges are sanded smooth. I am going to use my exhaust pipes to help align the transom during installation, so I taped them up to protect...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

A little detour from the transom - where can I find replacement flaps for my 4" exhaust pipes? Both thru-hull pipes look like this, where half of the flap is gone. The pin that the rubber flap rides on is welded in - I am capable of cutting the tacks and re-welding myself if I can find...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Yessir, if you look back at post #127 in this thread, I laid CSM around the border of the entire transom, in the keyhole, and in both exhaust holes before I glassed the front face. The entire transom is now fully encapsulated.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Tonight I cut another spot out in the keyhole to measure in the same spot - right at 1.620 - 1.625", which is right where I want to be. Tomorrow I'll get the edges cleaned up.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I got another layer of 1708 down on the transom tonight. Before laying it down, I cut a spot out in the keyhole and measured the total thickness after the first layer of 1708 - about 1.575". That means one layer of 1708 added roughly 0.050" of thickness, so after tonight's layer, I should be...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Not a bad idea. I may just cut out the keyhole tonight and check thickness to see how much 1 layer of 1708 added and figure out how much more I need to add. One variable that I don't know yet is how thick the PB layer will be when I install the transom. I was guessing about 0.040" thick. Any...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I laid the rest of the first layer of 1708 on the transom tonight. In total, I did it in 3 pieces to make it more manageable. Again, I wet out the transom, wet out the mat side of the cloth on a sheet of plastic, then transferred the cloth to the transom and rolled it out. This method seems...

Yes sir - I closely read your thread regarding the scarf joints. Once the transom is installed, this is what I'll be focusing on next!

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Tonight went better than yesterday with the 1708. I started with a much smaller (~16" wide) piece. After cleaning with acetone I rolled out some resin on the wood, then laid the cloth mat-side-up on some plastic and wet it out. I then transferred it to the transom and further rolled it out...
