1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

What is the minimum thickness it can be? My transom ranged from 1.75" to 1.81" thick around the keyhole before I tore it out. Right now I'm around 1.52" thick. What's left of the hull around the keyhole is about 0.20" thick glass - so with PB that puts me right around where I originally was...

Repairing rotten wood on bass tracker deck!

This is the restoration forum of the iBoats website, so you're mostly going to get advice from folks who have a "long view" on repairs. Putting a new sheet of plywood down over a rotten or rotting deck may get you another season or two, but it's a bandaid at best. It won't stop what's going on...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Well, today didn't go like I planned. I started by wetting out the face and edges and then I made up some PB to fillet the edge where the smaller piece of plywood ends. Next I draped the 1708 over the face (mat side down) and began wetting it out. It fought me pretty hard to lay down around...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks for the tips guys. I made some more progress today. I got the exhaust holes cut and I took your advice, @Reserector_ and glassed the inside of the exhaust holes and keyhole first. I had originally planned to do this when in the boat. After that cured, I trimmed the overhang and put...

I'm sure others will pipe in, but I'd say you're OK to use it while actively heating. Remember - flash point is defined as the temperature at which a compound begins to give off vapors - this is not the same as the ignition point. I work a lot with a spray adhesive for a hobby business I have...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks. Yes, I plan to lay some PB at the edges and then go right over that with some glass. I already broke the edge there with a 1/4" round router bit. I'm planning to do a layer of CSM on the back face and build layers of 1708 on the front face to get the thickness where it needs to be. Will...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I got the keyhole cut out and finished the 2nd round of filling/sanding the PB-filled holes so they are nice and smooth. Hoping to cut out the two exhaust holes and start laying glass on the transom (laying flat on the work bench) this weekend.

Ebbtide Riviera Project - how to access floor in bow compartment?

Thanks for the props on the stand, I think it turned out nice too. Just make sure you have a plan for getting in and out of the boat. You'll be doing a LOT of that, so if your plan is to crawl between the 18-24" gap between cap and hull, that may get old pretty quick.

Ebbtide Riviera Project - how to access floor in bow compartment?

I left my windshield, steering, wiring, cleats, etc. all installed on my cap when I pulled it (18 1/2 ft boat, no bow-rider section). If I had to guess I'd say it was somewhere between 400-500 lb (just a guess though). I just got a handful of guys to come over and we lifted it off and set it...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks - my question is more "once it kicks, how soon can I kill the heat in the garage?" I ended up running the heat about 2 hours after I finished spreading the PB. It was 77F when I turned off the heat around 9PM, and here at 7AM the next morning, it's only down to 60F in the garage with an...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I got some more work in on the transom tonight - just a short stint. I clamped the new transom into the boat and made a tracing of the holes. I used the "PC on the Bayou" method to fill/seal the holes with PB. I used a 7/8" bit to drill out the 6 holes for my drive, 2 holes for my trim tab...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I laminated my transom today. I went with 1 layer of CSM between the two sheets of plywood. It was my first time working with fiberglass and resin. All in all I'd say it went well. Thanks for the feedback on the scarf joint bonding.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Question for everyone: I'm going to have to scarf together wood for two of my stringers. I'd rather not buy an epoxy kit just for this. Any drawbacks to gluing together my scarf joints with PB or with a layer of CSM and polyester resin? I'm going to be fully encapsulating the stringers in...

Also, my brother just bought a 1973 Glastron Carlson CV-19 that he's going to restore...I'm sure he can use any leftover's I've got when I'm done rebuilding mine.

Maybe I overestimated a little, haha. I only wanted to buy the cloth once.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Well, let me tell you a 50 yard roll of 1708 is HEAVY. It would have been a nightmare trying to just unroll it on the floor or my folding table, so I broke down and built a dispenser rack today for both rolls of glass.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

All good tips you two, and thanks for encouraging me to not overthink it. I finally got the garage fully cleaned and reorganized today around lunch. I moved the engine to the back corner under my welding table and set the drive on top of the welding table. This gave me some room to set up a...

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

I was wrong - I bought 4 gallons of Cabosil, not 4 lb. But still, sounds like I should be OK.
