I think by start over they mean separate the two bearings again. A small distance should do it. I don't think you'll need to remove the bearing from the shaft.
Does a 350 SBC have 5 drain plugs too? I found 4 - one on each side of the block and one on each exhaust manifold. If it does have 5, where is the 5th?
Drill 1/4" core samples near the bottom and evaluate the wood chips that come out. If they are dark and/or wet, you should probably replace the transom. If they are light in color and dry, fill the hole you drilled with 3M 5200 and call it a day.
That's what I want to hear! The transom being so large has me nervous about the PB kicking before I'm ready, but I'll almost certainly be installing it in the winter in my climate controlled garage, so I should be able to achieve whatever ambient temperature I want. Hopefully by the time I'm...
I'm leaving the hull on the trailer and will add additional bracing as required. I talked to a guy who as rebuilt 3 of these and he said Power Play built the hulls so thick he didn't need any bracing on his full gut restorations. I figured I'd see how flimsy it feels with the cap off and...
The cap is fully separated from the hull and sitting up on 2x4's. Hoping to move the cap to a frame in the back yard this coming weekend. I'm ready to get this thing off so I can start measuring and then really dive in to working on this thing.
I started separating the cap today. I was able to get all the way around and have the cap sitting up on blocks of wood all the way around. After removing the aluminum rub rail and screws beneath that, I went all the way around the boat with a 3" paint scraper to work between the joint. It...
Can you post a picture or link to a thread showing what you're talking about? I've got the engine (350 SBC) out of my boat now and if this is something I should consider doing, I'd like to do it while the engine is out.
Thanks for the input / reassurance that I just need to do the transom. This week I towed a small trailer back to my friend's house to pick up my engine and bring it back home. Last night I built a dolly for it. Space is super tight in my 20x20 one-car garage where I'll be doing the...
Hello, hate to create a thread on this, but the links in the Adults Only thread for winterization are taking me to some unrelated threads.
I've got a Mercruiser 260/V8 (SN B651656) and Alpha One Gen I drive (SN 0B612075) that came in a 1987 PowerPlay XLT-185 that I'm restoring. I pulled the...
Thanks, but I'm talking about only seeing what new posts there are in a specific forum - say, Restoration and Repair. Also, the "what's new" link doesn't show which threads I've actually looked at and which ones I haven't.
Is there a way on the new forum to see new posts since you last visited? The previous forum had some kind of colored indicator to show which threads have had posts in them since the last visit - that was extremely useful for those of us wanting to stay on top of what all gets posted. Is there...
I feel like there was a thread on here in the last month where the poster took their new (to them) boat out on the first trip and blew the gimbal bearing because one of the forward engine mounts sunk.
Yeah, I should just tell her it's in the tool budget for the boat. 😅
Got a little more done on the boat today.
I got the bilge cleaned up and the trim pump removed, allowing me to pull up the last piece of carpet in the bilge:
I also went ahead and removed the rub rail. It looks/feels like...
Ah. That makes so much more sense, not sure why I wasn't thinking in 3D. Looks like good progress, and I hope to be where you're at by the end of the year!
I'm planning on doing all my glassing with polyester, so I'd rather stick with PB, but don't want to get into a situation where it kicks before I can get it in and clamped.
12:1....wouldn't that be 12 inches long for every inch of height? How tall are your stringers?
