    3.0 exhaust manifold over heats

Ricky, I am just reading thru your leak down post. Agree that best to get a sound motor first > fix the compression issues.

1998 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI Backfiring Under Load & Loss of Power

An acetone test is checking for leaking valves by using a light liquid, like acetone or diesel fuel. Some use gas, I do not recommend that. Its simply pulling the head, leaving the valves installed with their springs and pouring the acetone in the port and looking to see is it leaks. Here is a...

1998 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI Backfiring Under Load & Loss of Power

Got it running > great! At least you can enjoy the rest of the season. How far you go depends on what you want to do and get out of the boat. While its an older boat, you have only had it one year. Does it accomplish what you were hoping for? In other words, do you plan on keeping it for 5...

    3.0 exhaust manifold over heats

In reading thru the OP’s post and doing my own research both the OP and I are under the impression that, by design, there is no water flowing in the combination manifold until the t-stat opens (perhaps a tiny bit due to a weep hole). Certainly not the norm that we are all use to, but unless...

    4.3GL VP Fuel Pump Issues

While what you suggest is not good for growing old as highlighted, but if you take your idea one step further and add in that safety element, then you are essentially replicating what should be working and is not. But before that route, a couple of thoughts: When the pump is jumped (so it...

    3.0 exhaust manifold over heats

Thanks for the background and further explanation. There are a few things going on here only one of which is hot exhaust. I do not think that low compression by itself would cause the exhaust to run excessively hot. But I do think if you have a situation where you are getting unburnt fuel into...

Trailer has working running lights, no brake lights or turn signals

Has the issue existed since the new wiring harness installed? I am assuming it’s a standard 4 pin type and you are using the trailer frame as a ground. If yes, here is one simple check with the trailer plugged in: using a multimeter set to Ohms and put one probe on the vehicle and the other on...

    3.0 exhaust manifold over heats

While I am not familiar with these engines and their water flow, I will try to help. After looking at online pictures of this engine’s components, I agree that water only flows into the intake / exhaust combination manifold when the thermostat is open. However, there is constant water flow to...

Why don't sea choice 1 1/16 seals fit?

If I may, here is a good inexpensive tool to add to your collection if you do not already have one (link). And here is a how-to vid on measuring bearings and seals (link). Also, you state “Seals are the most difficult parts to get on the hub.” how are you doing this? Reason is that I find the...

    Thermostat too dirty

Danger Will Robinson! We need someone with experience on this system to help the OP further, like @Fun Times But in the meantime, what you are describing in post 12 can harm your motor. Two things jumped out to me: (1) needing 3 gaskets to make it work and (2) installing the t-stat upside...

    Engine won’t idle

That is not only frustrating but loosing thrust at a critical moment can be dangerous. Please provide some more info: did this symptom only occur after the carb rebuild or was it the reason to rebuild the carb? Does it idle at all or does it only stall when coming off throttle? How do you get...

    Intermittent idle issue

While I am still learning about the electronic side of these ECM controlled motors (I have a 2005 5.0 GXi-E) the 2 beep symptom leads me to think its electrical. Here is my hypothesis: at that particular RPM the motor / boat is vibrating more than at other PRMs and an electrical connection is...

    connecting 2 batteries

While a bus bar is the proper way to electrically connect battery cables together as AD points out, I am concerned as to why the need > based on your post it seems as if you are using a Perko Off-1, 2, All (link) battery switch to connect up the two batteries to the boat’s electrical system. As...

    5.7 GXI-HF making "whistling" noise

I would start with any vacuum hoses. My 2005 GXi-E has 2 vacuum hoses: one that goes from the top of the fuel cell to the intake manifold and another that goes to the regulator fm mid intake manifold. Nos 16 and 25 in the attached diagram.

    Rusty engine pulleys

Due to significance of the rust (and accompanying belt dust!) of, at the time new to me boat, I changed out all the pulleys which included a new alternator which I was on the cusp of changing out anyway. For the circulating pump bell pulley, I did grit blast and paint it as it was no where near...

    Power Steering Pump Replacement

One item of note: these pumps usually do not come with a pulley. So you will need to reuse old or get a new one. And you will need a PSP pulley remover, installer, like this kit link. That is the kit I have and its worked on my 2005 VP 5.0 GXi-E. Here is a how-to video to use it if not familiar...

New Starter for 4.3l 3 post solenoid

I was speaking generically to help the OP understand why there are 3 and 4 terminal post solenoids. If his original starter with a 4th post is not for the coil, what it’s for? Unused? And frankly I am also confused at a starter with a plastic gear so if any info on that as well would be...
