    no , i am suggesting taking known good parts IE: fuel pressure reg from the working motor and attaching it to the non working one ,its reasonably easy to swap the regulators.you can even do the same with the pump. grab yourself an online manual if you are unsure of your ability's to put things...

    i would check the fuel pressure regulator 5 psi means the pump is operating , whether right is another story., you should be able to switch from one motor to the other to test.

    that sounds like something is trying to get out of the sump , where is the oil pressure at ?. coupling possibly , but i doubt that being it is more a knock than a rattle .

    im gue3ssing you did not glue the O ring in place between the outdrive and the bell housing and it feel out during assembly. take the outdrive off and use contact adhesive on the O ring so as it stays in place this time .

    the reason you should not use the HP fuel pump is the carb has no return line or fuel pressure regulator to send unused fuel back to the tank . relying on a simple needle and seat to hold 18 or more PSI of fuel pressure is asking for trouble / leak. a holley carb has no option for a return line...

    look up the part number for the base gasket on both motors , if the gasket is the same there is a good chance that the power head will fit.

    interesting you are getting tapping after a stumble , it could mean the engine is running very lean from lack of fuel pressure, have you checked the filter where the pipe enters the carb , some carbs have a fine mesh filter there .

    how did you set the valve lash ? ,if you fitted new lifters try backing them off till they click / clack then down 1/2 a turn and see if the problem disappears .. check all the lead are on the correct cylinders. IE: you haven't crossed a couple.
