    V8-270-C-B Exhaust bellows (hose) replacement

I wish I knew the serial number. The tag on the cover is all but blank. It looks like some kind of cleaner or solvent got on it. I encountered one a while back that was missing the cover and was able to call Cobalt to get the serial number. I need to call them one of these days and do the same...

    V8-270-C-B Exhaust bellows (hose) replacement

Now that the elbow is out… maybe I should crawl back in there and check the manifold gasket in that area….

    V8-270-C-B Exhaust bellows (hose) replacement

I pulled the elbow. The bellows is soot covered as can be seen in the photo. It is also soft and pliable. Looks worse out of the boat. Cannot find a hole but no evidence of it leaking around the ends either. I have a pretty good collection of manuals from Volvo. None of them talk about the...

    V8-270-C-B Exhaust bellows (hose) replacement

What about torque values on the bolts and nuts? It’s pretty standard for me to use an X pattern when tightening things but it would also be good to know if there is a specific sequence to follow. I don’t want to replace a bellows just to start a leak at the catalytic converter by doing shade...

    V8-270-C-B Exhaust bellows (hose) replacement

I have a leaking exhaust bellows between the left elbow and the Y-pipe. A local shop recommended changing it but didn't offer any tips on how. I slid the bellows down the Y-pipe thinking there may be a gap to work it off the pipe and install a new one but there only appears to be a 1/2 inch or...

    Engine alarm won’t stop

I can’t believe how hard it is to get parts these days. If it’s not back ordered, it gets lost in shipping.

    Engine alarm won’t stop

Ran the boat today with a new trim position sensor installed. The alarm didn’t sound once while it was running. Can’t put it on the lake yet because I lost the grommet clip. I spent a couple of hours with a magnet and a borescope to no avail. I think the designers intended the engine to be...

Alarm won't turn off Volvo 4.3gxi

I had a trim position sensor causing an alarm. Disconnecting the sensor didn’t silence it. It beeped every 7 seconds until I changed the sensor. Ran for 10 minutes today in the tank with no alarms.

    Engine alarm won’t stop

I unplugged the trim position connector and kept getting the scan code but the boat wasn't beeping... for about 5 minutes then it started beeping again. Once about every 7 seconds (counted, not timed) and a new code appeared on the scanner... 924 indmar cam phazer(?). I don't see SPN-924 in the...

    Suzuki lower units

Is there an alternate source for Suzuki lower units? I ordered one 5 weeks ago that FedEx or one their contractors appears to have lost. Can’t pay another $3800 even if Suzuki has gotten another in stock. Mercury, Yamaha and OEM can be sourced through SEI but I haven’t come across anything for...

    Engine alarm won’t stop

I didn’t get a chance to work on it today. I spent the morning studying the manuals I could find. I had to babysit the grand-babies this afternoon. At this point I pretty much assume I need a trim position sensor but there is no way to get one before the weekend. I won’t actually order one...

    Engine alarm won’t stop

I finally got the engine running again. Had to pull spark plugs and locate TDC for the #1 cylinder. The distributor was 180 degrees out. Beeping frequency changed but did not go away. I couldn't get the local Volvo Penta shop to take a couple of minutes to hook up a code reader once all summer...

Do you use Loctite on your lower unit bolts?

My experience with red loctite is that it isn’t uncommon for it to take heat, as in torch, to break it loose so I am with you on your choice not to use it. I wonder if that parts manual has a misprint. It would be nice to hear from a certified Mercury mechanic on this.

Do you use Loctite on your lower unit bolts?

What does the manual actually say? I don’t have a Mercury manual but I know the Suzuki manual calls for thread sealer instead of thread locker in those places. Fairly certain Yamaha does too. The only “certified” boat mechanic I watched do an impeller didn’t put anything on the threads.

    Uncommanded tilt up

The motor is a 2015 Mercury 150 HP 4-stroke. It started going full up on it’s own a couple of weekends ago. When I was called to the boat I used the throttle to trim it all the way down but it came all the way back up as soon as I released the switch. I then used the switch on the motor and it...

Fuel coming out VST vent hose

I got lucky this morning. Someone offered to help me tow the boat and was able to use a boat that had to come off the lake anyway. So, possible stupidity was averted. The boat with the VST issue spent a week in the shop a year ago with the same problem and the mechanic told me he wouldn’t be...

Fuel coming out VST vent hose

This is a generic engine question prompted by a Suzuki DF250. The VST vent is pumping raw fuel into the air intake which in turn floods out the engine. I know there is a VST issue and have one ordered but the boat is on the lake 3 miles from the nearest boat ramp and swapping out a VST is not...

Is it feasible to straighten a prop shaft?

Don’t get me wrong. My preference by far is to replace it but it’s coming up on 6 months waiting for the order to come in with no updates on the status from Suzuki. I had the lower unit for that boat on order for a month before I was able to source a replacement from another dealer 300 miles...

Is it feasible to straighten a prop shaft?

I may take a stab at it. I have a press and a dial indicator. I can easily make the V-blocks out of steel or wood. I can’t think of a better way to get experience and the owner knows the situation with getting a new shaft. I could actually practice on the one from the old lower unit. It hit a...

Is it feasible to straighten a prop shaft?

2017 Suzuki DF200A mounted on a 2017 Crest tri-toon. Definitely happened in the water. I am the only one who has trailered that boat all year. I pulled it out this time for general servicing. As soon as I put it in reverse to back out of the slip I knew something was bent. Boats shouldn’t shake...
